Battle Royale Video

Post by 14Rivers » Tue Jul 29, 2003 1:12 pm

If you don't know what "Battle Royale" is, it's a Live-action Japanese film about a highschool class that is forced to kill one another untill there is only one left. It's harsh, has some good characters in it, and a LOAD of Evangelion refrences (Myamora Yuko even makes a cameo appearance).

The film is black balled in America for fear that it will spark another rise in school shootings. This means that there doesn't look like much of a chance I'll ever find a domestic copy.

Anyway, I thought that I'd love to make an AMV of "BR." Goo Goo dolls "Long way down" immidiately came to mind. In any event, I plan to make this video, but I can't until I get good source material. My Hong Kong video rip is contaminated to hell :? . I was worried that if I went with a hijacked Divx I wouldn't get good framerate, my next option is ebay I guess.

My real question is this: Does anyone know where I can get a good DVD copy of Battle Royale pretty cheap? Is anyone interested in selling theirs?
Might be off topic so feel free to move the post, but I'm hunting A battle Royale DVD in order to make "Long way down" into yet another video.

I dunno how much "pretty cheap" is for you, but you can try:

HKFlix

they have tons of asian DVDs at reasonable price (you'll probably need a region free player tough :P)
You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.

There's an episode of Kodomo no Omocah where the boys and girls in the class split up and then end up having a battle against each other to decide a winner.

There's this one cute scene where Tsuyoshi and (oh what's her name again - Aya?) that girl he likes are on this plank, supposed to fight each other but both jump off the plank together and I wanted to put that over the "I'll never play this game" scene from BR and maybe do a few other scenes.

OK that's not really much to do with this idea but I thought it was funny.

Oh and dont get a PAL version of Battle Royale cause the UK edition has field blending >< I recommend the Hi-bit japanese copy :)

As for your video idea, sounds funny, I'd download it, as I like a bit of Kodocha to fill in the hyperactive little girl void in my life.

As for a DVD copy, I couldn't use a British source, not in NTSC USA. What I was hoping in finding was a regionless Disc, like my Macross TV series import. This collecters set came with the worst english translation I ever saw (Think Zero-wing), but it had good picture and no region. The stream won't matter TOO vastly because I do an analouge conversion technique rather than a direct digital rip. As long as I don't get any of that MPEG blocking crap.

SO, regionless BR DVD has anybody seen one at a good rate?

If you've got a DVD and a DVD drive in your computer or even if you don't, you're better off buying one. Considering the fact that there's no reason to do 'an analouge conversion technique'

What exactly are your reasons for doing 'an analouge conversion technique ' as opposed to ripping the DVD?

MPEG blocking crap? Wtf are you talking about?

:?

Well, while I do have a computer DVD drive I just would rather rip from an external DVD source, it gives me smaller clips, that are easier for me to catalog. I don't notice a substantial video quality loss, myself, so it's your typical 'Ain't broke why fix it' scenario.

As for MPEG blocking, that's just the term I use to describe some low-quality DVDs that have a video that is horribly compressed, and therefore has a grainy, I say "blocky" picture during high movement. I'm not a mad A/V nut myself, so I'm just using a generic terminology. Sorry it's not completely accurate.

...Woah...Gianaxing.

No, you're correct in saying blocking, although it shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentance as the DVD capturing, it makes them sound like you think they're related, which they aren't.

Just forget the fact that ripping a DVD is like 20 time easier than capturing it, and much less time consuming.
