Linux Sucks. Proof: I Wasted Time!

Post by danielwang » Mon Jul 28, 2003 1:35 am

Ugh. This bites.

I've spent 3 hours doing "it". 6 hours I should have spend studying. 3 hours, which is very valuable to me. 6 entire hours, or 360 minutes, combined with several days of other work I have been doing on "it".

I've been trying to install Slackware Linsucks off of floppy disks. But no, it sucks. With Windows, you insert the disk, select the packages, config the system, and install. With slackware, you have to drag the disk set over several floppies, edit the tagfile on the first floppy to show which files are on each disk, and put a install.end on the last one. SOme of the *individual* files are over 1.44MB (say, 2.7MB?).

Linux Sucks. Ok, I have a headache and my personal problems do not necessarily reflect the entire Linux software content. But this is why people use Windows.

I think the system is interesting and well structured, I personally blame the person who thought of making the disk set structure looney (two gzip files and a text file for each package) and ignore documenting it. Additionally, every single package in "A" is set to required, requiring extra investigation and more hacking.

FACE IT YOU DISTRO DEVELOPERS:
THE "LESS" UTILITY IS NOT REQUIRED.
IT IS BLOATWARE!

Ok, that's off my back. It should be quite simple actually, and documented to boot (no pun intended):
Core crap: Required
Bash: NOT required, you can choose any shell
cron: NOT required
LILO: NOT required, but reccommended for booting
etc...
Some libraries: Necessasry for other crap

Do they have to make it so difficult? i planned on installing Slackware becuase I thought it was small and easy to use. Was I wrong!

In related news, I've tried setting the Cygwin Bash Shell as my Windows Shell, and it ended up making the system unusable. But on the next boot, "Last Known Good Config" resets the values. How convenient of Windows - a feature that Linux DOESN'T HAVE. If you remotely set your inittab to runlevel 0 (halt system) and reboot, someone has to physically access the server to fix it. Windows well automatically reboot again and rollback Last Known Good after a (default) delay of 60 seconds. Does Linux do that? No. All in all, Windows even beats Mac in both idiot-proofing the system and allowing hackers to modify it without much risk.

I've also tried to run Mac OS X under Cygwin, Syslinux, and VMWare, but it seems it only works under Darwin, which requries a PPC processor. Cygwin and Syslinux boot off of a Windows system and just put it in a obvious codebox. VMWare is better, but doesn't efficiently simulate processors. How annoying. I called Apple up and asked how much was the source code CD, they laughed.

Clarification:
3 hours of intalling "it" and another 3 hours downloading "it" make a total of 6 hours. I could have written my "Mythology of X: 1999" dissertation in that amount of time, and put in a bibliography too.

What do you need Linux for, anyways, besides tinkering around with?

I agree, Linux is great for hacking around with.
But for some reason, companies like to use Linux distros like this for mission critical purposes.

Quote: "I'll never ride in a car with MS Windows in it. It'll crash too much."

However, Windows 2000 is commonly used for EFIC, avionics, life-safety and other systems. Although there is always a physical control lever (a dedicated IC chip in the case of fighter jets), it usually is Windows 2000 running the algorithms in the back.

It's amazing what people will do.

P.S. I'm also trying to create a Windows .NET Gundam install that boots off a disk, by creating the install from the patched ISO running the Patch system, and then putting it on disc with a bootable bin. Windows doesn't like it.

Exactly. Linux maybe cool and all that stuff, and it is really neat that (almost) everything is open-sourced, but in the end, Windows is idiot-approved and user-friendly..?!

Ahem, well I installed Linux on my system a year or so ago, only to play with it a few weeks and then it got banned from my HD... to much toying around, not doing anything *really* useful...

Ah my 2 cent...
