J-Phone and DoCoMo are THE REASON so few Japanese people have personal computers with Internet services.
Perhaps I misunderstood you, but if what you infered was that Japanese cellphones are way behind, I must say you are quite incorrect, it is American cellphones that are in the stone age. This winter Sony will be releasing the first US cellphone that can take pictures. Japan has had that feature for years. In fact the newest feature when I was there this past summer was taking MOVIES with your cellphone and sending them to friends. Their ring features are endlessly customizeable, and can access the wireless internet which is EXTREMELY prominent in Japan.

I completely understand. What I meant to say was: considering the alleged futuristic timeline, why is the Anime portayal of Japan so far behind? I am a NTT DoCoMo shareholder, I know how fancy those phones can be.
In many Anime series supposedly in the furure, communications devices are either not present or sound like crap. And the ringtones suck.
In older versions of Gundam, it can be noted how many times ship/Gundam "coded" comminitcations have been intercepted and files lifted off of computers. A Gundam has even been stolen. In Gundam Wing, it only took Heero 5 minutes to rm -rf /* all 20 Zeon Mobile Suits. In G Gundam, attackers made off with Domon's files. And apparently the Earth Federation isn't using crypto.
If they were using Windows, they could simply set up Encrypting File System and Lock On Resume.
Perhaps by the time 0083CE comes around, PGP will be broken. But security through obscurity will *always* work. They can't decrypt without the algorithm. No encryption? Put your files in WordPerfect 3.7 without the headers and nobody will notice.
