Kanji -> Romanji translator?

Post by Bushido Philosopher » Sun Jun 29, 2003 3:41 pm

Anyone know of a translator (online or program) that can translate kanji to romaji? I want to know the names of some peopl,e but I don't know kanji. And of course if I stick it in most translators it'll translate it into the actual word rather than the romaji name.

So can anyone help me?

Do you have the kanji in text format? That would make work easier... I could help you with that.

If it's not text though... still possible, but a bit time consuming. I've done it before though.

So, gimme the names and I'll try to help ya out :wink:

An online translator may well get them right actually... probably not always though.

Names are usually fairly easy to translate, since as a rule they tend to use the Kanji's kun-yomi... if you know what that means... :roll:

It's not exactly what you're looking for but this website http://www.rikai.com/perl/Home.pl translates kanji into hiragana (which you can then look up with a hiragana chart for the romaji spelling) and also gives possible English meanings for the words.

Huh, wow I never realized that actual japanese characters could be inputted without it just being a buncha question marks.

Oh yes, to answer silveraeon's question....

To make it simple: kanji are the complicated characters you see. Katakana is an alphabet used for foreign words, mostly English. Hiragana is the base of kanij. It is a simpler version of kanij in a sense. Romanij is the English alphabet version of the Japanese alphabet.

Wow, now that I think about it, it's really hard to put into words....you just know it when you see it. Uhm...try asking someone else or look for a more in-depth guide in a search engine.
