Bootlegs?

Post by Milliardo » Thu Jul 10, 2003 11:00 pm

If any of you have ever searched for anime on e-bay, I'm sure you've come across a few complete series for only about $30.
I was wondering if any of you know if they are bootlegs or not. I can't exactly e-mail the seller and expect an un-biased answer. I'm not entirely sure as to how to go about finding the answer other than asking you guys.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

If the DvDs rip you off, (i.e. only 3 Episoders per DvDs) it's not bootleg.

It's bootleg if:

It has Chinese and English subtitles.

It's a Region 0(playable on all DVD players) DVD.

It's cheaper than the original Japanese Import/Domestic DVD.

These sellers don't tell you the absolute truth about the product they're selling.

Ah! Thanks guys.
I guess they are bootlegs.
Geez, I guess anime that cheap was a dream too good to be true.

Well, keep in mind that poor people use ebay, too. If the seller only lists one copy of that series, and there's a picture of the box set, you can tell if it's bootleg or merely someone getting rid of an anime they don't like anymore. It's rare that people would price things so low, but some animes don't have many episodes. I've gotten used anime for cheaper at anime shops, even the rare outrageously low prices. The big key with ebay is when they have duplicate posts for the same item - that means they're massproducing them, star* for the obvious bootleg seller. If you're shopping ebay, always check the seller to see what else they have listed, and what sort of reviews they get. Like you said, you can't take their word for it, but you can take a close look at their operation. :?

Yeah, sometimes you luck out.

A friend of mine got the Gundam Wing DVD box set off Ebay for 45 bucks plus shipping. And yes, it's the actual North American release box.

Guess the guy just got sick of Gundam or something. I know a few guys in the military that have been selling their anime cheap to get rid of it so they will have some extra cash... but they were just seeling locally. Like, they would hang around the DDR machines and ask anime fan looking people if they were interested :P

Hey I'm in the military. and I found this out. some countries DVD players are really expensive. So they make VCD's Which are cheaper to produce. so you can get an entire series for really cheap. That was how I picked up the Love Hina series. for less than $30.00.

But I will say this you do have to be very careful on e-bay. their are a lot of bootlegs out there.

Some people(me included) price box sets really low and have the auction go on for the longest amount of time so people just keep bidding and the price keeps rising.

Well, yesterday I decided to go see if I can find any LEGITIMATE anime. Well, I think I found two worthy ones. One was a R2 Real Bout High School box set, and the other was a R2 Gatekeepers box set. :/ Kinda nice that they both were under $50 last time I checked, which is a bargain (assuming the seller is keeping his word)

Heck, I went to this "eBay shop" and they were selling bootleg Chobits OSTs -__-. When they include OP/ED Maxi Singles as "Bonus Tracks", something is fishy. The photo they posted is either just a photo of the original, or the result of color scanning + printing the cd insert.
