Effects Help

Post by Shun » Tue Jul 08, 2003 5:13 pm

After watching Rurouni kenshin twice now and the fight with sojiro about 5 i have decided to make my first video to this. I have the dvds and the software to rip and edit. But first i need some help with effects i have seen in other videos that will greatly influence how i do mine. Here is the list of them, if you could only answer 1 or 2 it is still a great help, ty :D

-Rapid flashing of scene, I'm not really sure what this is called but it goes from black and flashes to the scene on each beat quickly.

-White flash, yes i am a noob but hey everyone starts somewhere :D

-Piano key effect - somewhat like the one that was brilliantly done in the evolution video

-Crossfade(?) ok so i am a giant newb. Anyway everytime i use a crossfade in premiere while testing it always makes it a long one, i wanted to know how to make it a short one into the next scene. This is probly a really easy answer but im to slow to realise it :D

-Moving over an image? - In the Hellsing vater unser video a very original idea of putting manga scans into videos occured. I'm not sure if i will be doing this in my first video but it would still be great to know. *hellsing spoiler* During the scene where alucard shoots alexander in the head a mange scene appeared but the view of the scene moved down the image.

-After image- leaving a small fade of the image moving as it continues to move.

Ok thats it for now. Most of these effect were seen in Fluxmaster and dwchang's videos. I hope you guys can help me and that my descriptions wernt to vague or mispelled :D

Oh man, reading over you post, I was like "wait a minute, this sounds like my video."

Do you mean like what I did in the drumrolls? This is easy. I first find the "beat" in the timeline and place markers there. I then place footage I want to show there and finally mess with the video opacity settings (this is how "transparent" it is). I go from 0% - 100%. This is "flashing."

Alternately, you could just go with straight cuts for drumrolls, but I find those harsher on the eyes.

If you mean like in my video, that's just a simple Lens flare. It's under "video effects" (for Adobe Premiere) and "Render"...I THINK. To have it go outwards (increase), that requires keyframing the effect. Basically set one frame to something like 5 and then the last at 100, this will make it extrapolate everything inbetween in intensity (5, 6, 7,....100).
Shun wrote:-Piano key effect - somewhat like the one that was brilliantly done in the evolution video
PM me if you really wanna know how to do this. It's easy (now), but for someone making their first video it's a bit difficult and would require me to write quite a bit.

As you stated, this is the "cross dissolve" transition in Adobe Premiere. You can easily move the length of the cross fade as much (or little) as you much. Just have the two scenes you are transitioning between overlap that amount (of the cross-fade).

Motion settings. Simple.

Unsure what you mean. Maybe you mean "ghosting."

A word of advice, but some of these things are fairly advance (I know some of you are laughing) and I somewhat don't suggest using them in your first video unless you have a lot of patience. There are quite a few things you need to know prior to even trying these effects (namely the Piano Keys and Key-framing effects).

PM me if you want *a ton* of specifics. I do warn you that it might take me awhile to reply. Fluxy is also very helpful. It's funny you mentioned me and him since he helped me with nearly all those effects for my "Evolution" video.

It's called a seizure. Don't ever do it.

It's called ACH MEIN EYES, THE GOGGLES THEY DO NOTHING. Avoid white flashes, too. They're cheesy.

Though you can do it with a white matte that lasts for a short duration.

Masks are an easy way to accomplish this. Create two layers with the same content and desaturate the bottom layer. Set the mask layer to multiply alpha mode (or whatever you Adobe people call it, heh) and keyframe the mask to appear and disappear to whatever beats you want.

Same layer trick, just mess with the opacity.

why would you do all this for your first video...just learn how to do simple timing and all that then learn effects

Why not do it? The only way to really learn this stuff is by doing it, and I see nothing wrong with trying to learn more than one thing at a time.

How happy will this person be if they purposely compromise their vision of what they want their vid to be, just because it might be "hard"?

Go for it, shun.

Take your time, and work on the effects until you're happy with the result.

depends...I think that if you take your time understanding basics of everything, and what makes music videos work and entertain someone.
You will be a better creator in the long run if you don't go into effects right away. If you take your time you may even figure out you don't even need those certain effects for that song. But you need basic training to understand that.

Not to be mean, but I find it funny he named my video when the majority of my videos are very effects-light. In fact, I think my best video "Glory of Love" has only two effects. It relied more on scene selection, concept and following-through on that concept. Sadly, the star-ratings do not agree and people seem to like the effects one quite a bit more.

Either way, I find it ironic he asked about some of my effects when I rarely use them. I was still honored :-P.

It's not the only reason. Being a whorebox definitely doesn't help!
