Bah... Me? I download EVERYTHING for a mirriad of reasons like:
1. I can barely afford upgrades and DSL. = No $ for DVDs
2. It would take more resources to prosecute me legally than what I don't pay to companies by "downloading" their stuff.
3. No firms other than Anime Licensing Companies take Anime copyrights seriously cause they're greedy, and every one else thinks anime are just silly cartoons.
4. Webhosts don't even know what's anime; They dont care or check WHAT it may be about and will remove any and all "big" media files like UNLICENSED FANSUBS or AMVs from their servers claiming it IS illegal because they want to cut down bandwith costs.
5. Anime Licensing companies are indeed GREEDY and overprice anime. Most HK DVDs releases can have an entire series in 2-3 DVDs for $10-30 while US licensing companies will charge $20-30 for 2, 3, or 4 episode volumes. Do the math.
6. Some Fansubs have BETTER quality than the "original" US releases.
7. The AMV scene will never be directly attacked by anyone since they would have to sue thousands of people at once and it would be pointless; Little do licensing companies know that if they made their own AMVs using their own tracks or those of the series, or included them as extras in DVDs their sales would sky rocket. (This will never happened of course, since they want to save on bandwith and will not give away ANYTHING at all for free.... This includes high resolutions video previews or trailers, pictures, backgrounds or any of the goodies that we find at fan-sites since they want to milk the fans for their LAST penny.)
*Have I ever seen an OFFICIAL anime license's site that offered ANYTHING that wanted me to go back there or buy ANYTHING? NO...*
And regarding software... As long as it's for experimental use or evaluation I don't care. I'll worry about retail licensing the day I setup my own "official" studio either for commercial or non-profit propietary material.

Wow, Dark Kamui, you really don't hide your lack of coherent thought, do you?
Sigh. Thanks for the laugh, it's always welcome.
I look forward to your well-thought-out, intelligent, sensible response. (*chuckle*)
If something's not licensed for distribution, it doesn't mean that anyone who wants to can distribute it freely at their whim. It's still someone's property.Dark Kamui wrote:4. Ever hear of licensing costs? Or distribution costs? Or stores paying their employees? Or voice actors paying for food?Dark Kamui wrote:5. If by "better" you mean a more literal translation, then possibly. But officially-released anime tends to have translations which are easier to understand while reading, and which can make more sense to their American audience. Are official translations perfect? No. But the companies are at least trying to improve their translations from release to release, and you know with an official release that you won't get broken, nonsensical English - unlike some fan-subbed translations and some import DVDs.Dark Kamui wrote:6. Well, that's just your opinion. And it's your opinion because you're closed-minded, have no interest or comprehension of what's reasonable, and are so self-centered that you desire the entire industry to pander to your own personal desires.Dark Kamui wrote:*Have I ever seen an OFFICIAL anime license's site that offered ANYTHING that wanted me to go back there or buy ANYTHING? I liked your old avatar more, temjin.
