It wasn't the British spreading themselves out over the world which led to their downfall, but the slowly decaying determination to carry out their plans. The same thing happened to the Roman Empire. Instead of sticking to the tried and true method of hard work, the population began to focus more on self-endulgance. They became too greedy, and threw all other important matters aside, giving ample time for the barbarians to penetrate their defenses, and take Rome by force.

A muscle, no matter how strong it is, must always be exercised to maintain it's strength, or it will fail. Our nation is starting to fall. It is our exponentially increasing desire to ditch the responsibilities of freedom, for all the priviledges it represents.

Conquering the world would be relatively easy, as long as the nation in charge maintained it's strength and discipline by both negotiation and warfare. There are some second and first world nations (Japan, England, France, Spain, etc) which could be dealt with by installing a puppet government, instead of full-blown warfare. There are also some third-world nations in which the population is sick of fascist regimes (Iraq is a wonderful example), it will accept any government system that won't torture or murder innocent civilians, or offer the public a sense of security. However, due to the guerrilla fighters still allied with the former regime, these would be unstable nations which must be split into territories, and given no government system. Granted, this would lead to a criminal-populated territory favored by outlaws and refugees, but it would be far superior to secure the borders of such unstable regions with landmines, rather than risk the lives of men and women fighting an ongoing protracted war, against a guerrilla force fighting a war of attrition.

On the other hand, the US "corporate empire", as it were, could take over the world by voluntary coercion. Coca Cola, McDonald's, our entertainment offerings, things of that nature are fucking powerful overseas. Not only are we making cultural inroads into foreign countries, the citizens in those countries are PAYING for us to do so.

Trying to force the world into being more American won't work. Like I mentioned above, though, many foreign citizens think nothing of using American products or enjoying American media. We don't necessarily control their country, but we can certainly control their minds.
