So I showed this thread to my roommate, who by chance is gay, but in that, "I'm gay but why act like I am" sort of way (so I manage to tolerate him). Anyway, he was like..."uhm...yeah" and then he said he doesn't like Yaoi 'cause it usually just stereotypes gays, and focuses on their sexual preference, as if that should be the central characteristic that defines them. He then went on this tirade about most film media doing this...and I sorta toned him out, 'cause he was talking about movies and shows I hadn't seen.

Ah, well...figured i'd share.

That's a good point, and I have to say that sometimes I agree. Though I doubt he's seen much of the actual anime, because many of them have actual stories.

But anyway, if I said the same thing about girls in anime, you'd call me a feminazi bitch.

Hmmm, perhaps I should have clarified myself a bit more: Most people don't like talking about certain things, but not all of them. Some people don't really mind, myself included, although this is usually a rare situation. The individual who I've had the aforementioned conversations with was also inclined to just not be bothered by such talk. I realize most people don't want to hear about certain things, and for them I keep these things to myself. I'm just saying its not entirely out of the realm of possibility to have a conversation about these things with someone.

It probably wasnt intended for Kaoru to be viewed as gay per se. I think personally that Kaoru was intended as a character whose thinking transcended issues of gender. The dude was an ANGEL, which means that although he had human form, his thought process was that of an angel and therefore probably not hindered by our normal social mores. More to the point, i believe that when he told Shinji that he loved him, he was probably refering to a non-physical love.

ON THE OTHER HAND

When you are nekkid and alone in a public bath with another guy and that guy (who is also nekkid) turns around and confesses his "love" to you, you are bound to take that the wrong way, no matter what.
