Well, my view on what Kenshin about is a small boy called Shinta who was sold into slavery only to have the slave traders attacked and slaughtered. The boy was spared thanks to this really weird bastard who later became his master and taught him this pycho sword style. During the revolution he left his master to help the revolution bring peace, only he was used to murder thousands of people so be become a wandering samuria in order to attone for the sins of his past and bring peace to the less fortunate. Protect the weak so to say.

Only, he is still reveired as the most feared and powerful swordsman and for that no one really leaves him alone. Ghosts in his past soon begin to stir and it unravells into an awsome story.

TV series>First 4 OVA's>Movie>Last 2 OVA's.

TV series: Takes place AFTER the revolution. Kenshin's future.

OVA's: Prequel to the TV series. Explains his past.

Movie: Just plain sucks. No need to actually watch it. No connection with the TV series or OVA's.

New 2 OVA's: Takes place after the TV series and explains some shit from the first OVA's.

Ha, am I that predictable? :)

As Tokyo has mentioned watch the TV series (episodes 1 - 12, 23/24 (sano ones) and 28-62. WATCH ONLY THESE. I WARN YOU...only ones related to the TRUE manga), then watch the OVA (trust/betrayal) and then the other OVA (rememberance?). The movie isn't in the true chronology, but worth watching after the series...any time after.

Reasoning for this? The TV series DOES take place after the first OVA (first OVA deals with Kenshin as the Battousai during the revolution), however, in the manga, the OVA is a flashback that takes place after episode 62. Trust me, you'll enjoy it A LOT more. In particular, you'll wonder what happened in the past this entire time and be more fulfilled when it actually is told.

As for the second OVA...it's worth watching, but at the same time it's not really in the timeline. It is LOOSELY based on the manga, but not really. The manga ending is A LOT different and the entire Revenge Arc is a lot better and longer. Unfortunately, they never animated this (and hence the short OVA).

BTW the reason I keep talking about the manga and backing up the timeline with it is b/c well...Kenshin is based on the manga (duh) and so it's best to see it the way it was meant to be...just like the manga.

I hope this rambling helps...been chatting on a lot of AIM messages and a bit erratic :-P

OK I think I got it.

So to buy them by their American release titles then it would be the DVDs that are called Rurouni Kenshin then the OVAs. Which have been named Samurai X for some reason.

That sound aobut right?

Yes buy the TV series called "Rurouni Kenshin." In particular, you'll only need discs 1 - 3, 6 (only for the sano eps) and 7 - 14 (whatever the last kyoto one is). Then the OVAs, idiotically named Samurai X (which will answer your questions about his past).

Thankfully, you won't have the STUPID as hell cuts that CN has done. Trust me, there's A LOT of them and they DO take away from the story and the characters. Also, I don't think I need to say this (since I always do), but watch it subbed. I think the voices are excellent and Kenshin in particular sounds a lot better since the VA can do the goofy/feminine side and Battousai real well (unlike the US VA). Obviously doing Kenshin well is...important :)

Glad we could help.

on certain issues (ie. Eva, Escaflone, Kenshin and the dreaded dub vs sub) yes ... your painfully predictable ... no don't take it negativly ... it wasn't intended to be negative ... but after reading your post ... or most of it i've come down to this conclusion ... why not just read the manga .. then sort though the anime and figure out for your self what is and isn't true to the original story? Although i can see this costing you a pretty penny... even though i don't know what the average price is on manga ...

No, I'm not at all insulted. Those are the primary shows that I love and hence my posts generally focus on them. In fact, I'm sure you notice I don't post in the other threads that have some random anime I haven't seen. Stick to what you're good at. Basically, I don't feel that I have enough knowledge to comment on those things, but on these I do :)...or like to thinK I do :).

Sad that I haven't seen that much "new" anime, but hopefully I will remedy that soon and then you'll have to put up with my random comments about Rah Xephon or NTHT :-P. Until then it's Esca/Eva/Kenshin comments :)

At least I'm consistent eh? :-P
