Finally got around to watching my copy of Patlabor WXIII and I have to say I am roundly impressed with this movie. While I do not consider it as good as Patlabor II (incidently my favorite anime movie of all time), this movie has its own unique charms.
Action fans may be a bit put off by this films slow pace, but the Patlabor movies have all been more about the characters and story than big robots, though the big robots do indeed show up ^_^
In WXIII, the original cast of the Special Vehicles Special Section 2 are placed in the sidelines, and a new pair of police officers, detectives each, are introduced. One is a young, somewhat niave fellow, the other an older veteran of the force. both lend themselves well to looking into the case of a series of possible serial killings near the area of Tokyo harbor's ongoing Babylon Project. Some suspect terrorists, but we learn early on that something far more sinister and frightening is slithering around in the depths of the harbor. This could have turned into just another monster-themed anime with the heros constantly running from the monster as it jumps from shadows, and there is some of that, but the film is mainly an examination of how the police and the government might realisticly investigate a menace like this should one truly appear in our midst.
I give this film a 9.1 out of 10
