Anime ratings

Post by CaTaClYsM » Thu Apr 03, 2003 3:36 am

I just found out that Spriggan was rated R, and before I found out that I heard about the CB movie getting an R rating. Exactly what is the typical rating an anime gets and how often is the rating something it truly deserves? I can see VHD Bloodlust with an R rating, but the CB movie and Spriggan? Just for shits and giggles I want to know what they do for the rating of anime series and stuff like that. And A place to find out what anime movie (or anyhting anime related) is rated. It isn't like I can go over to animenation.com and see since they don't list the ratings.

Since most Anime only makes it to video as an import it porbably recieves no rating. It would just show up as "Not Rated".

They pretty much rate anime the same way they rate live-action movies. Since American censors tend to be really touchy, something as mild as a gunshot wound or profanity is enough to warrant an R rating.
Strength without the wisdom to harness it is as useless as a sail with a hole.

I was surprised about Spriggan too, then I watched it again and saw how much mass death there was... Plus its an extremely anti-american movie.

And I would bet that the anti American aspect had NOTHING to do with the rating.

well CB's being rated R i believe was due to the fact they smoke and its a new law....atleast in Cali, i dunno if its national, that if theres smoking its an automatic R rating. This is because when i went to the official site for it like a few weeks ago it said it was something lower, i dont remember exactly but it wasnt R. But whatever im probably wrong --;

It is rated R due to 'some' violence. I guess the clip of hte guy reading the newspaper and getting it right between the eyes was too much for the people rating the movie.

Spriggan: If you had as much blood, death, and all around violence (especially with him killing as a child) in any non-animated movie, it would easilly get an R rating

Well, speaking as a Brit (different ratings), I'm surprised that most of Eva is PG (Parental Guidance, no real inhibitent to anyone buying and watching) rated. including the one where Unit-01 punches in Unit-04's head and there's rivers of blood dripping from the traffic lights and everything. I thought that that was one of the most disturbing scenes I'd seen in a long time, animated or not.

I think that the censors everywhere tend to think that animated media can get away with more because "'it's not real". Sure, they say, Mononoke-Hime has people's heads getting shot off, but it's a cartoon so it doesn't count.

Here's how much sense ratings make:

If you say the F word once, the move is PG-13

If you say the F word more than once the move is rated R.

If you say the F word once, but use it as a term connected with sex, then it's R.

So...

If you say... "What the f--- are you talking about." and it's the only time you use the word. It's PG-13

If you say "What the f--- are you talking about you f---er?" Then the movie is R.

If you say "I was talking about how I f---ed her last night" and it's the only time you use the word... it's still R.

Aren't ratings fun?
