The only thing I see keeping this down is that Spirited Away is a stand-alone movie. You can watch it regardless of if you have seen any anime. Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door is a continuation of the Bebop Story (~Episode 2X). It's harder for casual viewers (i.e. normal people) to watch this and therefore, make it a success.Metro wrote:Woohoo, its official! Disney is going to give Spirited Away a wide release starting this Friday.
Maybe this will encourage Columbia Tristar to give Bebop at least a wider release...
I remember way back when they were debating releasing the End of Evangelion on screens. That would make no sense and in the end probably do a lot of damage. Imagine one of those parent groups or crazy groups like "CapAlert" (groan) getting word of a movie that has religious references and disturbing imagery. Like always, they won't do any research or actually watch the film, but it'll definitely label anime fans in a very negative way (kind of like after Columbine did for videogamers).
I guess what I'm getting at is that some anime shouldn't be widely released since it'll do more harm than good (parent groups and viewers not understanding).

Hopefully the academy award will encourage Disney to re-release the film and expand the size of the release.
Hoorah, anime reaches the ultimate. Hope you are happy Metro

Hate to say it, but that probably isn't ever going to happen since he is getting very old and he will (gasp) probably pass away soon. Not to say he doesn't deserve it, but...well...time and all that.Metro wrote:Now Miyazaki just needs to win best director or have one of his films win best picture
On a positive note, Miyazaki has already seen international fame and won numerous awards. I know everyone focuses in on the oscars, but in some ways, International awards are far more prestigious since it means the entire world thinks your stuff is awesome (not just the US like the Oscars). IIRC he's already won some pretty high stuff in the international scene. So don't worry, I think he (as well as the world) knows that he's the shit

And as for the Oscars, I don't think he really cares about them. He at least didn't care about them this go around. However, winning Oscars will certainly lead to wider distribution as the art form gets more attention and respect from both critics within the entertainment Industry and the public at large

(nod nod) I agree and it'll be nice, but like you said I don't think he really cares that much since he is already an Animation God. It's just that the US finally acknowledges it.Metro wrote:And as for the Oscars, I don't think he really cares about them. He at least didn't care about them this go around. not going to happen... with the introduction of 'Best Animated Feature'... the academy is now free to award animated features while keeping them out of the 'best picture' category... and when you win best animated features... its like winning best director in one swoop also.
