The Associated Press reports that master thief Lupin the Third, a comic book hero in Japan for 30 years, is about to make his Hollywood debut — possibly stealing his way into becoming Japan's next cultural export a la Pokemon and Godzilla.

Gerald R. Molen, producer of the Oscar-winning "Schindler's List," has acquired the film rights to the work and is determined to make the story of Lupin a box office success.

Molen refused to disclose the monetary terms of the deal or the names of the possible cast for the movie, slated for theaters in a couple of years.

"Lupin the Third," which started out as a comic in 1967, is extremely popular in Japan, inspiring a TV cartoon show and five animation films. More than 3 million copies of the Lupin comic books have been sold.

So far, the work is less known elsewhere, although it is available in translation in more than 100 nations, including the United States, Italy, Madagascar and Hong Kong. The TV series began airing in the United States last month on the Cartoon Network.

*yawn*

The Japanese already did this. Lupin apparently looked like something out of a bad disco movie....I don't think they even bothered putting this stinker on LD, but I could be wrong.

I think that Lupin would make a better live action than DBZ. If they are gonna make a Lupin movie then dont make the characters look exactly like the anime versions. They should stay in character but dont try to make them look so goofy *cringes at the thought of scooby doo*. In addition Akira could possibly make a good live action as long as they keep realism in mind.
