Anime Character Sterotypes

Post by WhtHawk » Wed Feb 05, 2003 6:49 pm

Is is just me or are there some strange character similarities in anime. An example: I just started watching Love Hina and could not help noticing how much Kaolla was like Ed from Cowboy Bebop. Both seem to have amazing flexibility as well as above average intelligence. Kaolla said she knows every body at school. In Japan that is A LOT of people; plus she was hanging from the ceiling during the first episode. That made me think of all of Ed's antics. Coming our of the duct work at random places, doing hand stands and typing with her feet. Both are girls too. Is this just a coincidence or a genius girl stereo type? What do you think or have you noticed somthing like this somewhere else?

well since i have only seen cowboy bebop i don't know just how alike they are, but if those are the only reasons i will admit that's interesting, however i wouldn't say there is some stereotyping going on. i mean a lot of animes have some similarities in their characters. i mean how many times have we seen a brooding hero type like Heero Yuy from Gundam Wing? or the feminine looking badass villains like Sesshoumarou from Inu-Yasha? the point is there's always going to be similarities in different animes but it doesn't mean they are stereotyping them.

I thought this thread ment something else, Love Hina is a stereo type, I've seen to many animes with horny virgins trying to get into a college (Mostly TokyoU) and then a girl comes into their life and messes everything up. Sakura diaries was kinda like that.

Dont know if its a stereo type but the main male and female characters always seem to fall on top of each other.

I know that there are stereo types in anime; as in everything produced by anyone from Disney to MGM. Like the hero is ALWAYS powerless to stop their love(r) from attacking (slapping) them. The hero wins, arch rivals let the hero win and never die, ect.... I was just noticing some of the more unconventional ones. BTW, The Non-Professional, any stereo type in anime is fair game as far as I'm concerned. So bring it on. I didn't know about the plot similarities to Sakura Diaries. Madzack has a good point too. The main characters usualy accidentaly get really close to each other. Perhaps, a plot stereo type?
