Hardsubs suck ass, and any company who uses hardsubs when encoding their DVDs needs to take a course in How To Get Your Ass Kicked 101.

Hardsubs are what they sound like. It's when a company, during encoding their DVDs, places the hardsubs directly onto the video footage, so that they are part of the video object file itself, rather than placing the subtitles on a seperate layer that will not show up when you rip the video footage. I'm working with Video Girl Ai, domestic release, and for some unholy reason, Viz decided to hardsub the english translation of the lyrics to the songs sung in the BGM throughout the series. So, in the climax of the series, there are massive amounts of hardsubs throughout the whole damn thing. I'm gonna have a bitch of a time getting rid of them all, and I came to the forums to bitch and moan about it.

...Viz, what is wrong with you, exactly?

This must be why people buy the Japanese DVDs. Well, that and horrific layering, such as in the domestic Nadesico. God, they suck.

Media blasters for a little while was hardusbbing some discs but later stopped, thank God. Hardsubs are a pain in the ass if you ever want to capture anything. At least when there is an insert song they are.

I was a little ticked that there was not a single clean copy of the Evangelion OP/ED in the entire box set.

Extras menu, go up to the Extras icon, highlight it, and there's the clean Op. I can't remember which disk it's on, but it's there. I know, someone else told me and I ripped it for him/her. So, trust me, it's there. It's just a secret feature. Easter Egg, I believe is the term.
