They may be unofficial DVD copies (i.e. not professionally burned or duplicated, but instead copied on someone's DVD-R burner).

He didnt buy the episodes in DVD format. He had some really high quality vhs tapes or vcds or something of the series and just burned them onto DVD discs..

Hmmm, that could be the problem. I've heard some DVD-ROM drives don't like DVD-R media. How old are your drives anyhow?

could be the issue. I'm not exactly sure how old the writable DVD "standards" are, but if the drives predate their introduction commercially, not being able to read such discs shouldn't be entirely a surprise.

Especially since these "standards" aren't mutually compatible, for pete's sake. See the link for a better explanation of the problem, which might also have something to do with your read issues.

I would say see if you can get them to work on a friends computer. If so, maybe you could get them to let you borrow their dvd-rom O_o

My DVD-ROM is from 1999 and cannot play DVD-R's. It played perfectly in my DVD player but won't work. Best bet is if you cannot get them to play in the next couple of days, get a new DVD-ROM. They're pretty cheap now a days, like I saw one for $50 ^^
