Akira Kurosawa in anime

Post by Madzack » Tue Jan 28, 2003 5:37 am

Are there any Akira Kurosawa influences in anime so far?

I haven't heard any anime-sensei citing Akira Kurosawa as their influence, other than Hayao Miyazaki, who is fortunate enough to meet him, even videotaping that meeting.

More ironic, peeps like George Lucas cite Kurosawa's influences more than the anime makers themselves.

Some people don't realize who they are truly being infulenced by.

Akira Kurosawa revolutionized many aspects of the film world... and many samurai stories owe a lot to this revered director.

However... it's possible that a filmmaker was inspired by Kurosawa and made a film that inspired an anime producer... and so the producer thinks of that film as the inspiration.

Many anime film makers have certainly been inspired by George Lucas... and yet one of the inspirations for Star Wars was The Hidden Fortress by Akira Kurosawa...

Princess Mononoke is VERY Kurosawa, that's for sure.

The hair cutting scene at the beginning of mononoke is especially reminiscent of Kurosawa, as are the mountain landscapes and the grey degrees of morality.
