The OVA series is an absolute GEM! Definate classic of the genre. It's 2nd on my faves list in my profile. It is underappreciated, I think people dismiss it because it is old (1988 or so).

The TV series has flaws, and big ones, including heavy inconsistencies with the OVA. The overall plot of the series - sucked. HOWEVER, every episode's own story within itself usually were excellent. Then there's Reiha, who saved the series IMO. As Miyu's character was very bland in the TV series compared to the OVA, Reiha added the element that I can't really describe except as a lovehate effect. There are scenes where I genuinely hate her, but as a character design I love her, I think she's one of the best villains in anime.

I think more people have seen the TV series because it is more recent (1997) which is unfortunate as it does not do anywhere near the justice the OVA series does.

(Footnote: Dates refer to japanese release.)

I have heard of it. Though, I haven't seen it; however, I hope to see it soon.

Have to second your review...the VP OVA is one of a handful of anime that I'm willing to watch over and over. (And the sound track CD is also worth having.) All rolled into one: one of my fave manga artists (Kakinouchi), one of my fave directors (Hirano), and one of my fave anime soundtrack composers (Kawai).

That scene when she drinks from her mother...gives me the chills every time I see it. I wonder how many people missed the subtext, though.

I was also unimpressed with the TV series. Some nice moments, but weakly conceived, as well as one of the worse dubs out there.

Dude! That TV Series kicks butt! Hell, the whole thing kicks butt. The OVA, the manga, all of it. :Þ I love it.

No manga is however better than the Violinist of Hameln Manga. And you should know that, Oboe. :)

Too true, too true. VoH is the best. My ultimate personal fav. ^_^ There's one thing about the Miyu manga that I didn't like. I kinda moved funny. It was hard to tell what was going on at times.

i actually quite liked the TV series,
Vampire Princess Miyu was the 2nd Fansub i ever saw, first being Trigun.
I did quite like it, i am currently buying the series as it is realised in Australia.

But, i am half goth, so the darkness and morbib style appeals to me, I never seen the ova's so i don't have any different opinions.
I do like her lil' hand ball.. Very mean,
It was just really dark, and i like that sort of thing so yer, i suited me.
However, its not listed as one of my fav's.. but i've been watching ALOT more things since then, and you always seem to enjoy things your've seen recently more then the ones you started on. For instance, i really cant get back into Evangelion. ALthough, Misato and Rei are still hot.
