Seriously, How important is appearance to you?
I want people to be serious and truthful here. Often when people mention looks, others make it sound like this is a shallow observation. But even if they say it's shallow, do they really believe it themselves?
When it comes to other people appearance, I really don't care. Ya, it affects how I act, but only slightly. I'd probably act more nervous around people who are physically attractive than people who are not.
When it comes to myself, I'd love to believe I don't care how I look, but it wouldn't be true. If my hair is out of place, I wear a hat. My face seems dirty, I wash it. I'm always checking the mirrior. I don't think it's as much for sanitary reasons, as making sure I don't look bad. But once I've reached that point where I'm about how I look, then I don't care at all what others say. Just one of those things where you it's easier to preach, than to actually do...

I can't say I've ever cared that much. Most anything I do is for hygeine only (brushing teeth, washing hair, washing hands after throwing dog poo at my professor's house, etc)
I don't own a comb, and while I have new shoes/clothing, I prefere the old stuff. The only thing that I do as far as appearences go is dressing up. Take me, add shinny black shoes, slate slacks, a blue button up shirt, silver ring, silver watch, tie of choice and sports jacket = teh swank!!!
Physically, I geuss I do care about my appearance, but not enough to go to the gym or anything like that. I could be more buff, or be better at sports, but I would rather walk in the park and read some good books on the top floor of my schools library.

I enjoy looking good, but not for anybody elses enjoyment, just for myself. My hair is shoulder length and black, and I'm growing it out longer because I feel like I would look good with long hair. I also get a lot of shit for being so damn dark in a farming community. It's not that I really want to be different than everybody else, in fact I often wish I could be accepted the way children born and raised on a farm are accepted, but that had nothing to do with my appearance, for if I tried to look like them (which I did in early jr. high) they would ridicule me for being white trash. I then learned not to care about what they thought and just went with what I felt like on the inside. So I guess I care about what I look like to myself, I just don't care what others think.

Presentation can make or break many different situations.
Projecting a positive image is very important.
so maintaining a good appearence is at the very base of all of that...
before you open your mouth the first thing people are going to see is what you look like.. so the situation can end positively or negatively before you even open your mouth..
I think anything with that kind of power, is very important.

Yet I can never reach it.
In my heart such sorrow dwells;
Remaining with me forever. ~Cao Cao (155-220)

Good point indeed.
You go into a job interview for a large corporation dressed in jeans with holes in them and a Metallica t-shirt or lugz with a pair of blue jeans dropped below your ass and they're going to call security. This works with a lot of political situations where people are going to judge you and make decisions of any kind, including school, court, work, etc.
