Help with survey questions

Post by danielwang » Wed Jan 15, 2003 5:02 pm

As you know, I am doing a survey to try and determine the probablility of relative grouped occurences in Computer Geekyness, Anime Otakuness, and Intelligence. What that means, is that I think that people who are smart and geeky in one area are likely to be geeky in the other.

I have almost finished my questions regarding anime and intelligence (logic/factual hybrid) but I am having problems with the computer geek part. A lot of my questions are flawed and deal with specific software/systems, and that could cause problems (!)

I do have a few control questions though, but it pains me to do differential scoring because I have not a large sample size and if I reduced the score of IT professionals and MCSE certs, that simply proves that the battery is flawed. THe following is an excerpt from the computer-geek battry I think I help with...

Control - Respondent (Produced Response)
Are you an IT professional?
[Y][N][Other: ]
Are you involved in the computer industry, or involved in computers for a work or non-related hobby, such as robotics and programmable logic?
[Y][N][Other: ]
To accurately judge the level of experience, please detail your knowledge, experience, and training in computers.
Please list certifications.
[Response: ][MCSE? Y/N][RHCE? A+ Other?: ]

(other control questions regarding home/work OS/software follow)

Factual Knowledge / Experience Hybrid (Multiple Choice, Produced Response)
Which type of Linux kernel verion is preproduction?
[Even][EvenDecimal][Odd][OddDecimal]
[FloatPointLength>3][CannotDetermine][DontKnow]
What is open source?
[Response: ]

It's damned hard to score produced responses, somebody wrote
"a stupid idea" in this space, I don't know whether it scored Geek=True or Geek!=True

What is Apple Macintosh ONYX?:
What is Microsoft Windows WHISTLER?:
What does GNU stand for?:
Fill in the blank: Rivest S______ Adleman [Not scored, NPCR side]
What does VGA stand for?
RAM=? USB=? Shell=?
[Not scored until I can calculate effect of controls on response]

2600, The ________ Quarterly [Not scored, of course]
S_________forge (Or list any other OSDN crap)
Bugt____ (Spell the official name correctly, not the word)
L33tsp34k originated as:
[ ] A way to signify eliteness in messages
[ ] A code to prevent reading by idiots
[ ] A trick to get past newsgroup keyword fitlering
[ ] A hacker slang joke
[ ] None of the above
Fill in the blank: BOFH = B_______ O______ From H______
Denver's oldest public ISP is N___ NET [Regional, not scored yet]
On a related note;
Denver's largest anime convention is N_________ D______ K___
[Regional, not scored yet, experimental]

Remember, this is only about half of the questions. The other questions seemed to work well so I didn't botehr to post them, but I seemed to notice almost noone got the question about Unix Kernel Version Numbers!

Feel free to answer the survey questions!

Daniel Wang

P.S. ANother control question, oh no!!!

Do you consider yourself to be a computer geek or hacker (NOT the criminal type)?
