What are the Most Annoying/ Overused Effects in AMVs?

Post by Sushi-Shark » Thu Oct 11, 2018 12:39 pm

Hello, guys! I'm the Sushi-Shark. Nice to meet all of you. I'm pretty new here, and I'm currently working on my first "real" AMV ever. It's current name is known as "The Case Study of the AMV Troll", and I'm hoping to highlight common mistakes I,as well as undoubtedly the rest of you, have observed in either amateur AMV makers or in AMV makers who don't put much effort in their projects.

The whole point of this video will be completely for satire, though, once the video is finished, I'll probably need someone to beta-view it just to make sure I don't cross any lines.

I know a decent amount of the jokes I'm going to be inserting in the AMV (A few classic techniques if you will); however, the jokes discussed have more to do with the actual footage than the tools/ effects used on said footage. I'm still working around and fussing with the tools; however, I don't have many specific names for some of the bad effects I have seen (All I know is that they don't look good and they don't blend well). The Scientifically Worst AMV: A Tragedy in 37 Parts by Illea and co. definitely helped give some pointers, but if you asked me to name any specific effects used, I wouldn't be able to tell you.

My question to you all is, when you watch a bad AMV, what specific effects do you frequently seen associated with them or what effects make for some of the worst AMVs, and why do they not work with their videos?

Thank you all for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

I'm curious why your first "real" AMV is just making fun of other AMVs... why not just make an AMV? Instead of mocking or satirizing how others do their AMVs, why not just make a good AMV and avoid whatever you don't like?

Hey some people get a bunch of inspiration and enjoyment out of poking fun at stuff. My second AMV did just the same. So Sushi Shark you are treading a noble yet silly path.

To answer you.

Twixtor.
Color overlays
Mask wipes
Excessive glow
Motion text of c the lyrics.

Imo

Random opinion here:

It always depends on how the effect is used.

Twixtor for example can be annoying when its another I MADE A TWIXTOR AMV video. But if you use twixtor to dramatize/highlight one scene its totally fine imo.
For example a drama video and someones about to fall down a cliff in slow motion I wouldnt mind some twixtor etc.

Same with Text. It CAN be good if u get creative with it and MAKE it work.
(most people just do cool 3d text on their overglowed twixtor videos tho haha)

Same goes the other way around I guess:

Use cookie cutter shitty
Mask Shitty
Do a shitty crossover video that just lives from being a crossover and a girl is hit by a car
Do 789099034 eye zooms

Also:

dont disable resample
make a dating sim reference
use bad 3d transitions
edit a video that doesnt fit the song at all
USE TV SIMULATOR

Okay I have to correct myself there IS one effect in Sony Vegas that I hate-
I HATE Tv Simulator and everyone who uses it shall be burned to ashes.

To conclude this:
I totally Agree that overusing and effect is annoying, but finding new ways to use an effect in a good, fitting way is kind of the key.
(and dont use tv simulator)

Thanks.

Hmm..

That's also good to note. From what I have seen, effects as a whole are mostly designed so they are barely noticed by the viewer. If they are noticed, they are not to detract from the video. Using effects incorrectly or so frequently they detract from the video is unacceptable. I will make sure to keep these factors in mind. Thank you so much for your help.

I will make sure to keep your notes on TV simulator in mind. I will admit that it took me a little while to look it up, but now that I know what it looks like, I should be able to avoid it now. Thank you so much for your help.

I wouldn't say the effects in Instagram AMVs are bad themselves, just how they are applied. Sloppily or with care. I've seen some full length AMVs using those same type of effects and making some very nice, artistic, and impacting AMVs. I really liked this one in particular:

I don't think it would have the same type of impact without the effects. Some say effects aren't needed, but how can you make an AMV like that without effects? Therefore, when they say effects aren't needed they are in essence saying these type of AMVs aren't needed.

Too bright flashes that are spammed on vid
Scenes that repeat in annoying way or too many times
Harsh cut with annoying sound at end of amv
Effects for sake of effects
Ghost frames everywhere
Bad lipsync, masking
Masking for the sake of masking
:bzz2: Making amv for the sake of making amv :bzz:
Still better than that MMO.
