Scene selection tips with multiple animes?

I'm thinking of making an AMV that showcases the environments, backgrounds, landscapes, and overall beauty of animation. For this, I'm wanting to use many different animes for this project, probably many of which I've never actually seen myself.

I was hoping I could hear from some people who have experience editing with multiple animes and how they go about choosing their scenes and organizing their footage. For instance, do you already have an idea of what scenes you want to use because you're familiar with the animes, or do you go into projects blind and find what you need when you need it? How long does it take to gather/look through footage you need? Stuff like that.

I'm hoping to achieve a similar type of look but this is the first time I'll be trying anything like this, so any tips or words of advice would be helpful.
