Otakuthon 2017 AMV contest (WINNERS ANNOUNCED)

Post by MusicalTendency » Thu Jul 20, 2017 11:01 am

Hi ! The submissions for the AMV contest at Otakuthon is open. Since I'm a new guy organizing the contest this year, I completely forget to post it here but if people still want to give it a try even if the deadline is really soon, go ahead !

Deadline: 29th of july 2017

General Information

AMV entries will be screened at the Otakuthon AMV Contest Screening on Friday, August 4, 2017. The AMV Contest screening will consists of two hours worth of the best videos submitted for the contest. During the screening, the audience will vote for their favourite AMV through secret ballot in the following categories: Comedy/Parody, Action, Drama/Romance and Originality. The audience will also vote for the "People's Choice" award for best AMV. If you are participating in the contest voting, please stay for the duration of the screening to give all AMVs a fair chance in the voting.

All AMVs submitted will also be automatically entered into the "Best of Show" category for best overall AMV as well as the "Best Visual Effects/Video Editing" category. The winners of these two categories will be selected by a panel of AMV Contest judges prior to the convention.

Due to time constraints, not all AMVs will be shown during the contest screening.

Participants may enter a maximum of two video entries total (one entry per category).

Deadline : Sunday, July 29, 2017 at 11:59pm

I just wanted to drop by and say this contest was a big improvement on last year and I appreciate the effort put into fixing it up. Last year the contest was a disorganized mess (both at the convention and online), and I admit I went into the contest this year with very low expectations. But I was very pleasantly surprised; the overall quality of entries was much more consistent than before and organization was much better.

Suggestions: More ballots! Easily fixed, but I did notice they seemed to run out pretty quick and people were asked to share. I'd also like to see editor names on the ballot, but I do appreciate that they were at least on the title screens this year.
Also, I don't know how much control you have over categories, but I think they need some adjustments. Some categories were packed, while others only had four entries, and many videos (upbeat especially) were put into categories that didn't suit them and put them at a disadvantage in the contest. While I enjoy the 'Originality' category I think it could be replaced with something more traditional (like upbeat!), especially if you're limited on the number of categories.

But like I said earlier this year was a huge improvement overall. Thank you!

(I didn't enter this year, so this is purely an audience POV. I can't comment on entrant communication and the works.)
