MomoCon 2017 AMV Contest - {Winners + Contest Stream Upload}

Post by Kireblue » Tue Jan 10, 2017 6:59 pm

Hello everyone. I'm pleased to inform you that MomoCon is now officially accepting submissions for it's 2017 AMV Contest. The submission deadline is Monday, April 24th, 2017 @ 11:59pm EST, and each finalist will receive a free 4-day membership to MomoCon 2017! The top video in each category will also receive a trophy and $25 Amazon Gift Card. The submission form for the AMV Contest can be found here

MomoCon also has a separate Video Remix (V-Mix) Competition that welcomes submissions using non-Japanese animation, original animation, machinima, video game, cosplay and even live action footage. Anime Music videos that would either be ineligible or do not fit into a main contest category are also welcome. Winners will receive an award and a free membership to next year's MomoCon (MomoCon 2018). The submission form for the V-Mix Competition can be found here

This year, MomoCon is encouraging editors to submit videos that match our 2017 theme of "High Fantasy". Any entry to either contest that our judges feel represents the theme will be eligible to win “MomoCon's 2017 Theme Award” and a $25 Amazon Gift Card. This award doesn't have a designated category, and so participants will still need to determine the best fit genre of their video if submitting it to the AMV Contest. All accepted submissions will be eligible to win regardless of their genre, content, or whether or not they make finals.

We'll also be giving editors that submit to either competition the opportunity to participate in online voting for our “Editors' Choice” Award. After the AMV Contest finalists are announced, each participant will be given a unique access code to vote for the video that they would like to win this award. Votes submitted by ballots at the convention will have a weighted value of 3x the value of votes submitted online. Editors are encouraged to attend the convention to submit their votes both online and in person.

General:
1a) All submissions to the AMV Contest must consist of at least 50% Japanese animation, anime-style video game cutscenes or anime-inspired stills.

1b) The V-Mix Competition is open to submissions using non-Japanese animation, original animation, machinima, video game, cosplay and even live action footage. Anime Music videos that would either be ineligible or does not fit into a main contest category are also welcome.

2) Videos must not contain watermarks or subtitles that were not inserted by the editor. Also, MomoCon will be making title cards for each finalist, so we ask that your submissions not include intros, credits, studio bumpers, lead-ins, or lead-outs not directly related to the video content.

3) Videos must be of reasonable video and audio quality. We suggest that your video resolution be at least 640x480p, and your frame rate be 23.976fps or higher. But we don't recommend submitting files that that are greater than 1280x720p or 29.97fps.

4a) Videos submitted to the AMV Contest must be under 8 minutes and only consist of footage edited solely by the entrant(s). Entries that use footage taken from other AMVs will be disqualified.

4b) Videos entered into the V-Mix Competition must be under 10 minutes.

5) Videos modeled after AMV Hell or similar styled "blipvert" formats will not be accepted into the main AMV Contest. Instead, we recommend that those videos be sent to the V-Mix Competition where they will be eligible to compete and win awards. Collabs and MEPs are allowed, but each participant must be listed on the submission form, and the video must only use a single audio track or a congruent audio mix.

6a) Entrants are only allowed to submit (1) video to a category. Also, entrants are only allowed to submit to (2) of the (6) categories. Entrants will be allowed to submit a 3rd entry if one of their submissions is to either the Trailer/ Parody or Comedy category. And lastly, a single video can not be submitted to more than one category.

6b) The V-Mix Competition does not have any categories, and so all videos submitted to it will be judged against every other video submitted. Entrants can submit up to 3 videos, and those videos will not count against any submission totals or restrictions for the AMV contest.

7) Submitted videos must not contain excessive violence, language or content that would place it above a PG13 rating. This rule will be enforced on a case-by-case basis.

8) Videos that were submitted to prior MomoCon AMV Contests are not eligible to participate. Also, videos that premiered before May 1st, 2016 are discouraged.

9) All submissions must be in MomoCon's possession by 11:59 pm (EST) on Monday, April 24th, 2017. Attendance to MomoCon is not required to enter the competition and will not improve your odds of winning.

10) During the judging process, all submissions to the AMV Contest that are not selected as finalists will be moved to the V-Mix Competition and be eligible to win awards.

Categories:
The AMV contest is split into six categories. Entrants are allowed to select the best fit category for each of their submissions, but if our judges strongly disagree with the genre of a submitted video, it may be moved to a better fitting category. The categories are as follows:
Action
Comedy
Fun / Upbeat
Drama / Serious
Romance / Sentimental
Trailer / Parody

*The V-Mix Competition does not have any categories, and so all videos submitted to it will be judged against every other video submitted.
Submissions:
The submission form for the AMV Contest can be found here
The submission form for the V-Mix Competition can be found here

Both forms require you to provide a download link of your video via a file sharing service like SendSpace. If using Google Drive or Dropbox, please ensure that the URL you send is a “shared” or “public” link. If your AMV is available for local download on A-M-V.org, you also have the option of instead providing a link to it's video information page. Note: Youtube or ”streaming only” links will not be accepted.

If your video meets the necessary rules and requirements, a confirmation e-mail will be sent to you within 72 hours. Note: At any time, MomoCon reserves the right to not show or ultimately disqualify any submitted video for any reason.

File Formats:
MomoCon is able to accept videos in a wide variety of file types and resolutions, but please do not upscale your videos. The preferred file type is MP4, but we also accept AVI, MPEG-2, WMV, MKV and many more. We strongly discourage submitting QuickTime, DivX, Real Media or Flash Video.

Judging:
After the submission deadline passes, our panel of judges will rate each video, and the top five AMVs from each category will be selected as a finalist and screened during the convention. Finalists will be announced and notified via e-mail about a week after the submission deadline passes. During the AMV Contest screening (May 27th, 2017) , MomoCon attendees will have the opportunity to vote on which video they feel should win each individual category. Once the votes have been tailed, the winners will be announced at the contest screening and via twitter https://twitter.com/MomoConAMVs . The AMV contest will also be streamed LIVE on MomoCon's twitch channel http://www.twitch.tv/team/momocon

In addition to the awards voted on by the audience, there will also be a “Judges Choice”, “Director's Choice” and “Editors' Choice” award.
  • *Judges' Choice Award: Chosen solely by MomoCon staff prior to the convention.
*Director's Choice Award: Chosen solely by the Co-Chair/ Founder of MomoCon “Jessica Merriman”, and comes with a GIANT TROPHY |:> :awesome: .
*Editors' Choice Award: Chosen by participants that submit to either the AMV or V-Mix competition
Winning the “Judges' Choice”, “Director's Choice”, or “Editors' Choice” award will not disqualify a video from also winning an award from one of the main categories. Accepted videos that do not make the finals of the contest are still eligible to win the “Judges' Choice” and “Director's Choice” award, but only the finalists are eligible for “Editors' Choice” award.

We'll also be giving editors the opportunity to label themselves as a “rookie” or “novice” on their submission forms. By selecting these classifications, participants will become eligible to receive the “Best Rookie” or “Best Novice” awards which are meant to recognize the hard work of editors at different levels of experience. For the purpose of our judging, a “Novice” is someone who has been editing for a year or less, and has little to no prior experience in video editing. A “Rookie” is someone who may had prior experience in video editing, but has been editing for a year or less, or has never won a major category award in a contest (Best Action, Drama, Comedy, etc). Selecting either of thee options will not disqualify a participant from making finals or winning additional awards.

Unlike the AMV contest, there will be no finalists for the V-Mix Competition. After the submission deadline passes, our panel of judges will choose videos to receive specific awards that will be announced during the V-Mix Competition screening (May 28th, 2017).

Note: Our panel of judges consists of over a dozen members of MomoCon's AMV and general staff. This includes various editors from AMV groups such as PixelBlended Studios, Chaotic Bad Raptor Studios, editors that aren't affiliated with any group, and also non-editors. MomoCon does not show any bias or favoritism to any particular group or editor, and takes steps to ensure that each video is judged fairly.

Prizes and Awards:
Each finalist in the AMV Contest will receive a free 4-day membership to MomoCon 2017. The top video in each category, and the winners of the “Judges Choice”, “Director's Choice” and “Editors' Choice” awards will also receive a trophy and $25 Amazon Gift Card. Winners that are present at the convention will be required to show a photo ID in order to claim their prizes. Anything not claimed will be shipped out immediately after the convention.

Each winner present at the V-Mix Competition will receive an award, and a free membership to next year's MomoCon (MomoCon 2018). Anything not claimed will be shipped out immediately after the convention.

Friendly reminder that the AMV and V-Mix Competition deadlines are 1 month away. AMV Contest Finalists will receive a free 4-day membership to MomoCon 2017, and the winners of each category will receive a $25 Amazon Gift Card.

Also, we'd love to receive more videos that match our 2017 theme of High Fantasy. So think things like KonoSuba, Seven Deadly Sins, and Magi

By the way im really glad you added a tag for novice and rookie editors in the V Mix submission forms. I thought that was a good idea after the videos from Momocon last year.

yep! :awesome: . We've already gotten so many really good rookie and novice entries that I'm considering making an entire division of awards for them (kinda like how cosplay contests have rookie and masters awards). Can't wait to see what else gets submitted :D

Will you ever consider changing the V-Mix competition? What's even the point of it if you're going to allow anime sources or submissions from the main contest to compete? It just seems like an excuse to give out awards.

The point of the V-Mix competition is to give us an opportunity to acknowledge and award videos that wouldn't normally be allowed in an AMV Contest. So yeah, in addition to playing good content for the audience, I guess that it is just an excuse to give out awards. Don't really see anything wrong with that though. Is that not the reason for all AMV Contests? To award and acknowledge people's hard work?
