24 fps vs 30 fps in AMV's

Post by Sephirothskr » Sat Apr 30, 2016 9:34 pm

Yes. There is a big difference in the two, and it's most notably seen in the transitions, effects, and zooming in AMV's, now, out of curiosity, which do you think is the best for AMV making? (and with frame de-sampling and making sure your project settings are good, you don't get ghosting at 30.)

Personally, I say 30 is the best because the video flows so much better. Example, this video of mine would not have been as flowy if it weren't for the smooth transitioning, I feel like 24 fps is better for mainly hardcut videos, but that's just my opinion. any thoughts?

if you get no ghosting and stuff why should you work with lower fps?
also ngsilver says it at the best "60fps ftw"
But i think there is no "best" if the source and product cant run well with higher fps then you need to work with lower.

You might not get ghosting, but instead you get duplicate frames, which make motion choppier, especially pans and tilts. Even if a lot of viewers won't notice, it's noticeable enough to bother me.

I think I used 29.97fps for "Waka Laka (for Osaka)" when I knew I was going to be speeding up most of the clips anyway, but usually I see no need to go above 24.

Some AMV's I've seen do the whole 24 fps and look good too~! But, the average I see is a simple 30. Unless your nostromo.

I typically export at 23.976 because that's what my sources usually are. Scintilla is right, increasing to 29.97 can cause jittering. 60fps is usually a magic number, but it increases your file size. If it's not necessary then don't bother.

23.976. I used to be in the 30 frame camp for the smoothness reasons, but you can get the same relative smoothness in the 24 rate and you avoid introducing stuttrry animation issues. Most animation follows the pattern of each still is usually 2 frames before a new one, creating a 2-2-2-2-2 pattern. Jumping to 30 makes it 2 2 3 2 3 which creates a lot of stuttering in the animation and really noticeable in scenes with native or inherent panning. While technically you can fix the panning issue with motion stabilizer to smooth it out again it'll force you to crop it in order to do so, so the end tradeoff for an extra 6 frames per second is either some sputtery animation and/or tiny loss in video quality and some extra work that doesn't necessarily result in extra smoothness for added effects/camera motion. In videos with a lot of added camera work and effects, it might be worth it but if you have that many effects and motion, stuff is probably moving fast enough from scene to scene that the smoothness you gain is fairly negligible unless someone binge watches the video enough so theyre familar enough with said video to catch those extra frames in the moments it matters or makes a difference.

most anime is made now with 23.97, you should work with the frames your source is originally encoded
