Court ruling sugggests that we may not be violating the DMCA

Post by The Wired Knight » Thu Oct 06, 2011 11:24 am

Court ruling out here in California recently held in favor of UCLA concerning copyright infringement and public performance of works purchased on DVD. This case also included a charge that they circumvented access protection violating the DMCA when they ripped the DVDs they legally purchased.

It should be blatantly obvious how this affects us since DVD ripping is an instrinsic part of this hobby. However, educational institutions are offered more protection under copyright and fair use defenses so its applicability isn't guaranteed. I'll be reading the court dockets later today since it should all be posted on Lexis (I have a feeling I'm the only one here with lexis access). If you guys are interested I'll pop back in with a full analysis later.
