I was just sad that the show and the first rescreen filled up so quickly, I had a few friends who really wanted to come support the amvs, it was great of them to do a 3rd screening though!!! Yayyy!! Already brainstorming ideas for next year, bwahaha >:D
I liked your video quite a bit. Good stuff. :)
Thanks so much!! :awesome: I really liked your work as well! The Pheonix Wright entry made me laugh soooo much!!

Thank you everyone and yes I got out of AX safely ( the AX personal were nice enough to give me a escort to my friends car). I am seriously socked and speechless about winning. I recognize many of the amv finalist names and videos as I am a fan of their works but I didn't expect to win. After the contest ended, and seeing everyone's vids I set myself up for losing. I loved many of the amvs and I knew that those were professional grade A amvs out there. so when I found out I won the first round I was scared and I dunno just amazed adn I started to shake and cry but I was happy. When I found out I won best in show I felt sick but happy, lol I felt like I was going to pass out at one point.

If it wasn't for my friends and the amv makers that inspired me (some of which who present as a finalist in this contest such as Pink Haze, I LOVE your works, Radical Yue and many more, and kazemon15 and Mr.Haregan (is that what you go by now-a -days?), thank you for inspiring me.

wow I really am so shocked and just overwhelmed. thank you everyone and I can't express my gratitude in words very well but I am honored and i dunno thankful for this oppertunity . Thank you <3
Is your video online somewhere? I can't find it, but it was really awesome :D

My other two entires are now in the database but I'll upload them tommorow as I need rest before work.
I'd like to let you know that after seeing your vid, my friend went out and blind-bought Duraga. After watching it with her, I might just have to do the same. It's SO underrated!

Congrats to all the winners! There were a lot of strong entries this year, just as expected. I didn't think I would enjoy the Fun/OVA category to be honest, but that category ranged from well edited to hilarious, so I'm glad it's in now [Though it kinda feels like they just brought back the AMtV category].

Also Neko, I'm glad you made it out of the con ;p

My reviews of all the AMV programming :P Yup, ALL OF IT. Including the AMV Comedian Joe guy. I'll put it in spoilers so you can choose to read it if you really want to.

But a quick warning, as usual, I calls it as I sees it.

The Main Contest
Spoiler :
Overall, the entries that were selected were a major improvement from previous years. For the first time it was logo/subtitle-less so many props there. Tech-wise, everything went over very smoothly with the exception of a small hiccup when someone bumped the equipment but that was quickly corrected and the video was replayed.

The only suggestions I have are, of course, the reworking of the rules (which Michael already plans to do) and altering the judging pool. Having 15 judges really does seem to be a "too many chefs spoil the soup"-esque thing. In addition to that, it may be a good idea to get some fresh faces in there who are currently editing and know what the standards are. Seeing cheap stock effects make it into the finals while videos with hours worth of work and roto'ing barely manage to sneak into the preshow is really painful to watch, and almost insulting as an editor.

I mean, you can't control what the audience votes for. If they see a series and a song they like, that's more than likely going to be their choice. The best that can be done is to make sure that they're selecting from the best videos possible.

But yeah, while it is taking very small babysteps, the contest is improving :) but I won't shut up until it really is a contest. :P
AMV 101
Spoiler :
I gotta say, I was pretty disappointed with this one.

I know that Ben bailed in the last second before the event but all I really walked away with was how to crop and zoom. And if I was brand new to editing and actually needed AMV 101...I think I would've been more confused than when I started.
But I will give props to Rider when it comes to what was demo'd. She actually sounded really informed and did a great job demonstrating the process that she used for her Ouran video. The only major problem would be that the program she uses is pretty damn out of date, therefore it won't exactly be a perfect example when people get home and attempt it themselves, but none the less, good job to her.

Beyond that, the entire panel just seemed to turn into more ego stroking with people playing their own videos and not actually teaching anything :(
AMV Chef
Spoiler :
I'd have to give this event a 3.75/5...
It had some really excellent points and some really terrible ones...

1) The AMV Train-wreck was a really fun idea. With the way the event is run, multiple judges and only one selected to edit, it's a great way for the judges to let out all that creativity they brought with them that they were going to use against the main editor.
xStylus no doubt had the best audio to present for selection. While wacky audio is good times, you want it to be fun, not pants-on head retarded ;p
My only real suggestion would be to keep the time the audience is contributing to shorter bursts. When Matt initially sat down and began working, the "game" seemed really dragged out, but after that it was brilliant. Let the audience yell, get their ideas and scene selections in quickly and then let the editors work their magic :D

2) The audience participation had it's ups and downs. When it comes to the "name the anime" game, it appeared that too many participants were selected and while I'm a major fan of Odorikuruu, it probably wasn't the best selection for a multi-anime video to show. Next time it may be a better idea to show a newer video?
The only game that needs to be brought out back and shot in the head is the "Right now,...." game. That was painful to watch and almost got more groans that laughs D:

3) The videos played...@_< I can understand introducing the judges but the MC and staff running things behind the scenes really aren't necessary... Instead of showing some more really fun bouncy videos to get the crowd jumping, vanity was selected and if the rest of the crowd was anything like the 10+ people I overheard discussing the videos...it wasn't appreciated.
Also, old videos were old D: Tim knows that I <3 him long time, but a lot of the jokes in "Right Now" don't really withstand the test of time....

And last but not least...the contestants. While the final product wasn't bad...well, it was really obvious that neither contestant prepared. Hell, they said so on the forum :P So in the words of Senpai from Senpai Says...."You can do betta! Now, count-u the sexy babes."
Or maybe it was just that first part that I wanted to quote >.>
Nic's AMV Event (Sorry, long title is long and I don't feel like looking up the correct spelling on your last name >.>)
Spoiler :
@_< There are only so many times I can watch the same videos played over the span of 3 days.
It either felt like you were going back in time to early 2000's or being forced to watch the host's/his friends videos after having the exact same thing happen at previous events.
I can understand a bit of vanity, there is nothing wrong with that. But if you're going to play your own videos, try to pick ONE and stick with it. Otherwise, the description of the panel/showing needs to be changed to "A couple hours of my videos and some friend's of mine."

All of us walked out as soon as Code Monkey began playing.
Cosplay Comedian Joe's AMV Comedy Hour
Spoiler :
:| Kisanzi and Castor Troy quite literally had to hold me back. I was so ready to shank this man... :|
You sir, have set AMVs and the hobby back decades. As soon as I heard "I'm going to play my AMVs for the next hour" I knew I was in for a bad time...but when the video actually started playing, I almost went into a rage seizure.

Random scenes from tenchi playing, subtitles, terrible lip sync, horrible quality...and some comedian's comedy act played.

Congratulations. You can entertain fat sweaty nerds with no taste.

I hate you. Please die.
So yeah, AX had it's ups and downs but will hopefully continue to improve. Less circle-jerking, more support for quality, and more videos in general ;p

Congrats to the finalists and winners and thanks to Castor Troy for buying us dinner after his win :awesome:
Todd, we look forward to seeing you in Colorado by the end of the year ;D

You were so silent after Cosplay Comedian Joe's panel while we were waiting for the bus that I thought you were gonna stab me for making us all go there.    :dino:

It was more like a combination of extreme shock and hate for Joe. I was actually trying to figure out the best way to get back to the room and hurt him as much as possible before the cops showed up. :uhoh:

Congrats to all the winners :)
you won Staff Favorite. there was no judge's favorite this year.

i really appreciate all the work people behind the scenes put into making the amv showings happen. i agree, the concourse hall wasn't the greatest room for the contest, i preferred where the second rescreen was over it, and Nokia of course over that but i understand why Miku took precedent over amvs. a big thank you to Michael and Nikki for putting the show together, and props for grabbing a third showing of the contest with the 2nd room already being maxed out with tons of people still waiting. i'm also blown away by the attendance of AMV Chef and Pro. Neidenbach's Phantasmagorical AMV Show. (nic mentioned he honestly thought AX was gonna make him change the name XD)

i am astounded by the popularity that seemed to come out of nowhere. not having a huge theater really raised level of demand for amvs at AX. rock on seriously.

i'm in somewhat agreement with niotex about the pro category. i saw plenty of "pro" videos in the regular categories, and many were even more professional than a couple that made pro. personally, because the level of skill that seems to be coming on a regular basis, i think we could do away with the pro category altogether and replace it with "Upbeat".

the OVA category was weird lol. but it worked and the audience loved it. (aside from the punks that would leave right after comedy. AX should seriously enforce a rule that if you want to go to the contest you should have to stay for the whole thing :x )

all in all, kick ass year for AMVs :amv:

i did mention to the funimation booth in the vendor hall when i picked up Summer Wars, i bought it specifically because of an amv i saw in the contest  (big congrats neko kitkat, you deserve it)

I asked a bunch of people while waiting in line and the general consensus was due to the fact that small rooms kept being used for the contest and AMV showings, people kept showing up to the next panel/video showing in an attempt to make up for what they missed. More of a sad thing than an awesome one IMO :P

The "pro" needs to be dropped from AMVTV and just turned into a fun/dance category and the "fun" needs to be dropped from ova. It creates a lot of confusion about where to submit to and just as previously stated, very few, if any of the videos in pro area actually pro :P

Pete and I were at one of his first standup routines and we never saw him again and I've never seen his videos. It was a sincere effort but definitely needed work (for cripes sake don't explain the punch line of your jokes!). I was shocked he was selected to do this panel in the first place. Not that he should be barred from doing panels. It's just that I thought Anime Expo would have been more....selective. Either that or maybe he was improving (exponentially). But based on your assessment I guess not.
