Con entries and foreign swear words

For an american audience--yes? No? Bad? I'm curious to hear from some coordinators--would you disqualify an entry if it used one, repeatedly?

I suppose it depends on what the word translates to commonly and if there Is possible ambiguity in the translation.

It's the German word scheisse---the only ambiguity is that sometimes it can be translated as "crap" rather than "shit".

"Out to save the World" has Bitch in it 4 or 5 times, so I doubt Schiesse is going to matter to an American audiance. The only real bad words are racial slurs, the C word, and the F word. I think there are others, but the S word in German shouldn't be an issue. :ying:

That was my thought, too. And I think things are relaxing somewhat in terms of profanity. I mean, I'm not a prude my any means (my language would make a merchant seaman blush), but even I was shocked when I heard them use the word "dick" on Supernatural.

This is what disclaimers are for.
A good con will cover it's own ass.

Played/won at Nan Desu Kan and if I remember correctly the end goes a little something like "you fucking, fucking, fuck..." etc...

Hell, an ass rape video won at Anime Expo...at that's the biggest con in the US :/
Besides, if they don't want you to have any bad language in the video, it'll be in the rules or they'll just DQ the video.

I think you're perfectly fine in Canada - even the english word "shit" itself is apparently okay to air on TV at all times of the day. As to the US - there's that one episode of South Park that kinda puts it into perspective IIRC.

Based on the rating system in Alberta as we have rate every video for cons here:

- Use of the word "Fuck" can get you 14A if used once or possibly twice in a non sexual way... Repeated use gets you 18. However, my policy for contests is no use of that word as there are usually familes with small kids in the audience and a con does not need a real angry wealthy mother threatening to sue over a single video (hey, in the US they sue over much smaller stuff)

- Bitch is ok so long as it's not crossed with other naughty words like "you god damn bitch", etc... Pretty much same with Shit.

In the end, most cons are touted as "Family Cons" and if you run a contest in main events, you want to be sure not to get the con in trouble. ALSO, it depends on the where you are. Surprisinly there are areas in the US and Canada where you can get away with swearing a lot but show even a shot of any partial nudity and your sunk... the oposite is true in other areas...
