If AMA were a PG-13 convention then there's be no question about this video getting in for preliminary screening.
I have nothing personal against any editor and the final decision was NOT mine.
In fact, this was the only video submitted that crossed the PG line...seriously.
As far as WHEN the PG rule went in?..it has ALWAYS been there.
One editor was kind enough to give us an option to take either an "uncensored" or "cleaner" version of their video.
The former was pretty violent so it's likely the "uncensored" would have been rejected.
Bottom line: everyone else seems to understand where the PG line is drawn...and I would rather piss off one or two editors over a long-standing rule than a host of parents who would certainly file grievances against the con as a whole.

Wow, AMV contest drama that *I* didn't create. I call this a historic moment.

I think the greatest offense my videos would make (if both make the cut) would probably be that one uses a song that'll get stuck in your head all weekend, and the other uses a beloved-but-cheesy '80s song. :)

But...he said it wasn't just his decision. He was unsure and asked other staffers and then the con head, so it's not really the AMVS Deuce Loosely approves of list. Asking other people is kind of exactly the opposite of abusing your power. Even if it had been pre screened with the others it would still have eventually gotten to the con chair who would have said no. Other contests are just that...other contests. I know for a fact that the winner of this year's Katsucon NSFW contest had been turned down by Otakon for being too racy...and also that a few other contests ran it with no problem. No two contests are the same. Rule 6 of this one specifically says "6) This contest will be viewed by a general audience (all-ages) so try and maintain a PG-rating. Absolutely NO sexual content, excessive violence, or profanity will be permitted." I don't think it had anything to do with being gay because I think overtly sexual lyrics for a "straight" song would probably also have been shot down. I know it doesn't rhyme but something like "what what, in my vag" would also not have flown.

Um, I can confirm that one of the entered videos had blatant homosexual themes, but no sexual ones. So I really doubt that homosexuality is an issue here...

Also back on topic...I know all 17 of those drama ones aren't gonna get shown so I was wondering how many each category was going to have.

There is a FINE line when it comes to language in sexually themed songs. Even my AMV "Rough Love" was rejected at Katsucon for being "too dirty" and was moved to the NSFW contest, but the language was a little lewd in the song so I knew what words put it over the line. An good example would be like the popular song from not too long ago on the radio "Tonight (I'm Loving You)", most people know the original is "Tonight (I'm F***ing You)". If the edited had simple been "Tonight I'm Screwing You" it would have still been too inappropriate for a contest like this, but "Tonight I'm Loving You" would work because it's not too graphic language wise for the requirements of this contest.
