I've got my ear to the ground when it comes to anime news, and I haven't heard a damn thing about anyone even considering picking up Azumanga. Based on what the show is like, I would be surprised if anyone did license it. A lot of the jokes require knowledge of japanese culture (conveniently explained for us by the fansubbers). Because of that, I would be shocked if anyone licenses it. On the other hand, it seems to be quite popular, so you never know. A company may realize they stand to make a great deal of money off of it, and get it. We'll see how it goes.

Well from what I glanced over at in NewType USA (disgustingly butchered and a waste of money IMO) it had been licensed, that and my sources at Madman.
Still I'd like to know how a US company would successfully market such a product without having ACME (American Christian Mothers Etc) shutting them down.
Make it too childish, you won't sell as much as you could and piss off a lot of the fans. Try to get it right, and ACME will probably go on a witch-hunt, something about perversion, bad family image (no parents, chiyo-chan's father is a cat), teachers who attack students...
I remember a Christmas time episode something about Santa and reindeer(sp) not existing and Santa being depicted as some kind of scary old man... (or did I just mix up Guu and Azumanga) That definitely wouldn't go down well.
Opinions expressed are those of someone who has had far too much to drink.

I suspect that the perverted teacher is actually Chiyo's father
.
Regarding ACME and content, compared to some stuff out there (Evangelion, for instance, or a lot of prime time), Azumanga would be TAME, and probably wouldn't even enter their radar. Hell, some of them don't even celebrate Christmas because of its pagan origins.
A bigger problem would be making money off of Azumanga here in the US (or Australia, for that matter). On the shelf, it'd have to compete against mecha series, sci-fi series, the big series like Trigun and Bebop, movies like Akira and Ghost In The Shell, etcetera. Compared to all that flash and boom, Azumanga would either be mistaken for shoujo or some weird thing that hardly anyone watches.
It'd have a lot to overcome.
