Number crunching... for SCIENCE!

Post by BasharOfTheAges » Mon Aug 09, 2010 8:17 pm

So, I was bored about a week ago and was finding things to facilitate my editing procrastination... came across some BONIC articles from a short time back and thought I'd get into the distributed computing thing again (I tried running something back in college - can't remember what). I've been running the latest build of the software since Thursday on my main system and my HTPC. I'm participating in the AQUA@home project that models quantum algorithms.

I bring this up here because a lot of us have seriously beefy computers that aren't really being used most of the time. This software uses your CPU and GPU to crunch numbers and provide data to the various projects. It does so in a way that will always yield priority to your tasks - you can even set it so it'll only run if your system is idle. I figured if enough people were interested, we could start up a team at this. Odd thought and all, but there it is.

EDIT - They have stats and shit... and the numbers are pretty large... hell, i'm already in the 93rd percentile (out of 2 million accounts) after 5 days.

On Bitgamer they have a folding team and you get points for it to put towards upload credit, which sounds similar to this. I'd totally be interested in doing this if there was some benefit or something we'd get out of this (even prize money we have no chance of ever winning would be kind of cool). While I like your idea I'm not really entirely sure what is supposed to motivate us to do this...and while most of us do have beefy computers, we don't leave them on all the time. I'd really need something to justify paying more a month for my electric bill....

There could be pie.

Or I could reasonably offer a million dollar prize for a top 10 ranking for as much as it would matter. The people at the top of the list have spare CERN clusters and CRAYs to run stuff on and they average a couple million points a day.
