Kumoricon 2010 AMV Contest - Category Discussion thread
Hello gang!
First a BIG THANK you to everyone who submitted last year, and we all hope to see you again!
There is a scratchwork page (currently showing last year's categories) at:
http://www.opusnet.com/guy1656/k2010-amv.htm
Discussion on the Kumoricon convention forums is happening at:
http://www.kumoricon.org/forums/index.php?topic=11764.0
But I am visiting this forum and Kumoricon's too, so let's say WELCOME for 2010, and what do you want to try this year, keep from last year, KILL from last year, etc...
Last year's editors had a LOT of fun with the 'Retro' category, and there seems to be much positive discussion about it this year too.
So - over to YOU ALL now - what do you want for 2010?

I'm not sure why you want distro copies and not lossless or nearlossless versions, is it space?
Also faraway deadline is far away.

Download speed and size is limited in rural Oregon.Kionon wrote:I'm not sure why you want distro copies and not lossless or nearlossless versions, is it space?.
But it's still worth living here because they let people have cooler toys than most high-bandwidth city folk get to play with ...
Also the max playback speed of the backup computer is slower, and another reason: it's also nice to have files that people with old computers can play. It saves money during the recession because more people can enjoy AMVs without upgrading...
What lossless formats do you have in mind?
I'd be happy to add those to the list.
Thank you for the excellent idea.
This is discussion about the categories, well in advance so that in case we all decide to try something BIZARRE or unusual, that people will have some months to try to create something from scratch that fits the odd-ball category.Kionon wrote:Also faraway deadline is far away.

Then let ne say the category I would like to submit to is retro, but I have an issue with your year choices. 1983 as a retro cut off? Arbitrary! 1985 at least is a round number, but 1989 was TWENTY YEARS AGO. Surely retro includes source like KOR (beloved most amongst all anime) which is 1987. And how could you not count mid eighties synthpop as retro, I just don't know. I am storyboarding a project using Alphaville, and surely they're retro by now.

Re: Kumoricon 2010 AMV Contest - Category Discussion thread
Retro was very popular last time and the audience enjoyed it a lot too.
We always get to re-tune definitions year after year.
Last time, most of the folks on the Kumoricon forum came up with FOUR criteria, of which you picked at least TWO.
ANy entry that satisfied (2) out of the (4) items was 'in' for Retro.
Not only that but last year's judges' panel bent the rules a little to let in a few that were 'close enough' as in 1984 music vs 1983. Or something like that. They are always interested in screening things IN first, and THEN they pick the ones they think will run best for the contest. (Incidentally I do not place *myself* on the panel.)
Anyways, last year's had one cut-off for music and a different cutoff for the anime.
(Two of the four criteria.) And yes it *is* arbitrary in some stretches, but that's why I ask a mix of 8 ~ 12 long-time AMV fans and some folks newer to AMVs to look at them all and see what works.
But it will be 2010, late summer for next year's contest, so some people are suggesting '20th century anime,' others are saying 'up until Evangelion' ( 1995 ?) - and that would include Sailor Moon and K-O-R, and also City Hunter (iirc.) Certainly the Lensman OVA !
We are trying to make the definitions as clear as possible so people will know what to make or what to submit.
And again, I really want to thank all of you for creating these wonderful works, and I wish to encourage you any way I can.
Something else which I think is 'unfair' is that (I asked a radio DJ about this) - how OLD does music have to get until you get to call it an 'Oldie?' He said that 'Oldies' had already become a defined, fixed set of music in the radio industry; no matter how many decades pass, Sammy Hagar, and Eddie Van Halen and Bon Jovi will never be called 'Oldies.' Dang it, I was waiting and eager to eventually get to call Alanis Morissette an 'Oldie!'

The definition of "oldies" music is constantly changing. The term "oldies" is usually applied to stuff like 50's doowop and 60's music. "Classic Rock" began showing up in the mid-80's, and was stuff like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, etc. Now, as bands pass the 20+ plus mark, then tend to get thrown on "Classic Rock" stations. I nearly curled up and died the first time I heard U2 on a CR station.

"Oldies" has referred to 50s and 60s stuff for at least 20 years, if I remember correctly; how is that constantly changing? Geirr's point was that "classic rock" is its own term -- and that that kind of music will never be called "oldies".CorpseGoddess wrote:The definition of "oldies" music is constantly changing. I mis-typed. I actually meant to say the scope of "classic rock" is changing, in terms of which bands are classified as such as each year goes by. My bad.Scintilla wrote:"Oldies" has referred to 50s and 60s stuff for at least 20 years, if I remember correctly; how is that constantly changing?
