More Relevant Search Controls

Post by Revenant Death » Sun Dec 20, 2009 3:43 pm

Maybe I'm missing something here, but recently I watched FMA and I wanted to see if there were some good AMVs done to the series...the key word there being "good". I found I could search for specific anime series, however for a series like FMA that brought up THOUSANDS of results. ...yeah, I'm not interested in watching THOUSANDS of FMA AMVs...really not. I'd rather just look at a few *REALLY GOOD* ones...unfortunately there didn't seem to be any way of refining the search criteria to search by...oh I dunno...number of opinions maybe? Overall rating maybe? Maybe by specific ratings? Really, *ANYTHING* that could turn those THOUSANDS of results into a more manageable number would be nice. It'd probably save a lot on bandwidth too since people won't have to go browsing through hundreds of pages of search results trying to find diamonds in all the rough so to speak.

I guess that brings up another point too...standards. This site has none...literally. I mean I could go right now and just slop together some pure bullshit, add on a random song, do a real piss poor encode and...hey! Yeah, it'd be up in a heartbeat, wasting resources and mucking up search results.

Now I'm not saying it should be turned into some kind of an editing elitists club or anything, just that, really, some bottom line ought to be established as far as acceptable quality.

Donators get to search by star rating, number of stars, and a few more things...but by your tone I'm guessing that's not what you want to hear.

It's been brought up several times in various threads (probably most commonly in threads trying to get streaming implemented on the org,) but bandwidth isn't an issue. I can't see really any significant load being put on the servers by just searching video information

If you think the org has low standards, why don't you go and try to find a good FMA amv on youtube? Yes, youtube has some good amvs but my point here is that even the non-donator search options are a significant leap ahead of searching on the tube

Ultimately, AMVs aren't about quality for most people...it's about having fun. The quality thing is largely driven by the regulars, and if you try to cut off the majority of your users you're not going to survive too long. That and the purpose of the site is to catalog every amv ever made...so "standards" kinda defeats that...

Between the donation options, the Reccomended Videos subforum, and a passing look at the Top 10% List, you should be able to find what you want. After a while, you realize that you really only need to keep up on the announcements forum for new vids like everyone else does. :amv:

No, I've no problems with the whole "donating" thing, although an effort to make it a bit clearer that if you do donate you get better search controls would be nice. In the hour or two I spent scouring over the site I don't recall reading anywhere that said you could get better search results if you "donated". I'm not sure "donating" is a real good word for it, seems to me it'd be better to separate the two forms, have a donation system, but then also have a kind of "premium subscription service" with a monthly access fee. That would be better too in that you could generally count on it more than you could idle "donations", in which case it's hard to really gauge what you're going to get.

That also takes into account new users. I'm sure for those who are heavily involved in this community and have been for years know all about the "donation" system, but again, for new users who aren't at all familiar with the workings of the site, well, the word "donation" doesn't really imply "premium subscription service", new users really aren't going to have any idea that they could be getting something a whole lot better if they "donated".

Ahhh, but that implies wanting to become a "member of the community" so to speak, which, quite frankly, most people really don't have much time for, especially if they're adults, have a full time job, a family, an active social life, etc. Most people I know would simply rather "pay for convenience" in not having to do all that...but again, the "donation" system really isn't very clear at all, especially to those unfamiliar with the community.

Did they get rid of the donation explanation that shows up every time you download a video and have to press a button to continue?

You mean that great big mess of small text that's plastered up with some meaningless, confusing looking graph that everyone automatically ignores?

*nods*

Not that I would expect the people who made the site to be experts on user interfaces or anything, but honestly, would it really kill you to at least do a ~lil~ bit of research first. It doesn't exactly take a college flunkie to tell you that the current system is, well...broken. To say the least bit. The "automatic download" system doesn't even work at all with modern browsers...not to mention a wide assortment of other problems, like losing the navigation controls when you scroll down the page for example.

And if "donating" gives you better *SEARCH* controls...um...why would the explanation for that be coming up when you *DOWNLOAD* a video? Kind of ass backwards there, ya know?

*shrugs*

The whole site could certainly benefit greatly by having a systems analyst and an expert in user interfaces go over the whole mess.

While most of your points are valid, there's no use in getting all butthurt over it - there's been a coding freeze. Nothing'll actually get done to fix it.

Whose getting butthurt? As far as a "coding freeze", well, I don't know anything about that, but considering the site looks and functions exactly the way it did the last time I popped in here (about TWO YEARS ago)...yeah...that must be one hell of a cold spell! ^__^
