I'd have to buy the XP OS seperately won't I?

You know where I can find out the comparison between the processor on here and the Asus SX138C? I checked that website you gave me earlier with the encoding and AMD Athlon processor QL-64 doesn't seem to be on the list.

Also I noticed in the product specs for the Acer laptop, there doesn't seem to be a graphics card included...

I can't find any comparisons either, but as a general rule the Core2Duo will outperform a comparable Athlon64 X2. (After some more searching, the comparable cpus would be the Turion TL-64 and C2D T7300 found on this chart. It isn't exact, but it'l give you an idea)

From what I found, it looks like that Acer has an ATI HD 3200 for graphics (it's an integrated graphics chip)

Woah, seems like the Core2Duo's alot faster.

For computers using built-in graphics chipsets under Windows, the game requires at least:

Intel Integrated Chipset, GMA 3-Series or above

This means the Acer laptop won't be able to run the game right?

As with the cpu, equivalent or better.

The ATI HD3200 will do fine. It performed better than the GMA-X4500M according to this (positions 130 and 135 respectively)

So processor wise, the asus is better.

Graphic card wise, the acer is better.

Asus:£419

Acer: £379

Would I be better off buying the Asus?

Battery life is about 3 hours for both
Acer has more hard drive space
Acer has a slightly better graphics card
Asus has a better cpu

I'd go with the Acer. The only real difference you'd notice with the core2duo is when you do your final encode.

As long as it doesn't take 2-3 hours like my current one then I'm happy :)

Thanks for all your help!

The simple answer is yes, but that's a rather technical subject. Suffice it to say that Core i7/i5 > Core2 > Core > Pentium > Celeron (generally speaking)
Right, I've been half-following this conversation and got to that part.

I am getting a new desktop PC soon, and I'm currently between an i7 and an i5. The i7 costs more, plus I'd need to get a more expensive motherboard to support it and some other RAM that would also end up more expensive. Do you think it would be worth its money, and what's the difference between the two anyway? I hear i5 should do the job magnificently too, so I'm wondering what one is paying for when buying an i7.

Supposedly, the i5 runs on part to the i7 but is cheaper and runs cooler (source)
the review on hardwarecanucks shows the i7 still has the edge, and both platforms use DDR3 (LGA 1366 can use triple channel ram, whereas LGA 1156 (i5s and some newer i7s) can only use dual channel ram)).

The difference in price of the ram (per GB) for the triple channel stuff vs the dual channel stuff is negligible. You don't have to use triple channel ram with LGA 1366...but that's just a little more potential you're giving up.

All in all, I'd go for the i5 (the difference in i5 and i7 may be made up by overclocking, if not exceeded...seeing as the i5 750 can get up to 4GHz)

Mm, thanks. It seems I will indeed go for the i5 too.
