Jimmy Eat World is punk? I thought it was more of a modern, pop-rock band.
I haven't taken the time to listen to all of their stuff, but Sweetness and the Middle certainly aren't punk......

Blink and Green Day are not considered pure punk bands by many. Most people classify Blink, Green Day, Sum 41, etc. as "pop-punk," punk rock for the masses.
Bands that are considered true punk bands by many are bands such as Pennywise, MXPX, Craig's Brother, Millencolin, Donots, A, anti-flag, bad religion, pipedown, beatsteaks, 98 mute, Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers, DK, Black Flag, the Circle Jerks, the Ramones, etc. etc. etc.
Not saying I don't like Blink, Green Day, Sum 41...I do listen to their stuff and I think it's pretty neat. Just saying that they're usually considered more pop punk than true punk.

greenday used to be considered punk rock, but like you I listen to their stuff and like it, hell I'm making a sum 41 vid right now. But some of my favorite bands are the used, finch, thursday, thrice, taking back sunday, rufio (<a little on the emo side I know>) sugarcult, and further seems forever, so I do have a pretty good understanding of punk rock.

Gotcha. The fact that you mentioned only Green Day and Blink as punk rock bands made me think you were one of those people who have a skewed view of punk rock. My many apologies.
One thing about punk...I personally listen to it not because I really believe the ideals. In fact, many of the things those bands say are almost humorous in their ignorance of the real world. But I do like their idealism. I also just love the music of punk rock...driving guitars, really neat drum stuff...just like hte music more than the attitude.
Great music to listen to if you're feeling down and kinda hate the world at that moment.

Going back to Jimmy Eat World though, you could make the argument that they are a "Punk" band. Even though they are on a major now, they were the kings of the indy-punk scene with at.the.drive-in for a couple of years. They did come from punk rock roots. Just because they don't sound like 1980's So Cal bands doesn't mean they aren't punk.
Are you down with the sound of the Devil's town?

Yeah, I must step down there. I really haven't heard much of their early stuff, so I'm not one to judge. I spoke too quickly.
