I think the real problem here is that he's using a black outline. All these questions could be resolved by switching to bright primary colors.

The fact...of what artistic choice works best for what circumstances? I'm pretty sure we're dealing with something far removed from fact. What fact determined that her eyes should be four times the size of her mouth?

I think the left image brings too much attention to her jawline and away from her features.

That in mind, he should stop thinking about what he likes, or what anyone else likes (unless they justify their reasoning) and focus more on what works, and what would help him convey the message he is trying to send. People's opinions are bias, fact isn't.
that's as silly as your 'use helvetica unless you have a reason not to' argument.
principles of design and composition should inform and guide you, not dictate what you do. and what kind of advice is 'stop thinking about what you like'?
you can follow every design principle in the book (and at the end of the day these are just rules of thumb), but if you don't make something you like, how can you expect anyone else to appreciate it?

If it's a matter of artistic nature, then why should he even bother asking for people's opinions? After all, the subject is entirely subjective, he won't get any conclusive answer from just asking which one people prefer or like.

Hey man, you leave Helvetica out of this ;_;

I still stand by the fact that what people like really doesn't mean all that much, because without any reason given as to why they like it, it remains nothing more than a vote of popularity. You're right, design principles should not dictate your choices but rather, support them. However, if he likes it, then I see no real need for him to ask for other people's opinions, how will they help him? If he likes one, but someone else prefers the other, then how would one decide which to go for?

What I am trying to argue is that there is no point in stating a decision without any reasoning. Either way, I stand corrected on my wording, and while he should like his decision, I firmly believe that he should require at least a reason for preferring it.
