1) What got you started in making AMVs? How did you hear about them?

I first discovered AMV's at a large LAN party. Lots of filesharing going on, and we had several people with projectors constantly running stuff on them. One guy played pretty much exclusively AMV's or anime related stuff the whole week. This was probably around 2001. The second and bigger thing that actually got me started in making videos was animemusicvideos.org, and the IRC chat. I met so many driven individuals and became friends with them, and shared my work as they did with me. We call that "beta testing" a video, and it's a really good way to get constructive criticism on your work, or simply the act of sharing it with people can get you motivated to finish it or to put that extra effort into it.

2) Why do you think you enjoy making them?

It's really neat to see your ideas come to fruition, and if other people enjoy them too it makes me happy. I also use them as a way to keep my skills sharp or to learn or try out new techniques. It's an amazing experience when you go to a big anime convention, such as AWA, and get to see your video and your friends' videos up on a big screen in front of hundreds of people. It's really fun to see what the crowd's response is to the efforts you put into making it. It's just generally good times |:>

3) Do you use any particular Animes frequently in the AMVs you make?

Not per say, sometimes I'll use an anime just because I want to use it, but the decision is usually made by the anime/song pairing. I do have a history of using Lucky Star and anime with green haired girls.

4) What kind of music?

Again, generally determined by the video idea. If a song/anime pairing comes up that really works for me, I'll make the video. If I had to describe what kind of music I normally would make videos to...probably "different." I try to stay away from mainstream stuff because most of it sucks, and I just don't find it interesting.

5) What themes do you like to base your AMVs on?

Again depends on the idea of the particular video. I do love the concept of taking an anime and trying to tell a completely different story with it in an AMV than the story that is taking place in the original anime. That way you can take ownership of characters and use them how you want. Mixing multiple anime or doing crossovers is also really awesome. And, I must stress that I have a personal love for anything original that someone takes the time and effort to create. Hand drawn animation, 3d animation, etc.

6) Are there any “inside jokes” (or even stories) that only AMV makers would understand?

There are sooooo many. Most of them stem from the various groups in our community who know each other irl, and attend cons and just hang out and stuff.

7) Do you use any certain word(s) to describe yourself as a person who creates AMVs?

Not really. Sometimes I have to explain what anime is to people when I tell them I make music videos with it. Pick a word you say? Hmmm, I'll have to go with "awsmcore"

8) Do you write Fanfiction or do any other kind of Fanart?

Not particularly...although I am a very creative individual, so I do my own original work. Once I tried to write a Nadesico doujin but never got beyond a few paragraphs of text.

JudgeHolden wrote:A study on new forms of creative expression and communication using digital technologies and an Anthropological study are two different things entirely. Anthropology is the study of human culture, therefore an Anthropological study of AMVs would involve studying the culture of AMV creators (our sub-culture). The above survey is a tool for a sociologist collecting raw data. An anthropological approach would involve studying how we interact, how our culture works. Honestly, reading these forums, doing in-depth case studies of individual editors, attending AMV creator gatherings (Cons), would be far more effective. A survey, or sampling , is an ineffective way of studying a culture. It's like handing a survey to a bunch of Lolita's in Tokyo, and thinking that said survey would tell you about Lolita culture. The only way to understand Japanese Lolita culture is to follow the group, or as many Anthropologists would do, become part of Lolita culture for the duration of the study (which is far more complex it may sound). The only reason I am making an issue out of this is the simple fact that she wants it published. If it where just a simple paper for a class, then it wouldn't matter so much; however, once you talk about publishing the bar / standards on your research are raised.

Just my 2 cents on the matter.

Point taken, just to clarify "Creative Expression" and the use of technology are specific to the folklore I'm studying-the class is filed under Anthropolgy but it is not exactly the same. Folklore is not quite sociology/anthropology, although the two intermingle, foklore asks less of "how" and more of "what" I am doing additional fieldwork, including in person interviews and attending a con. I just thought this could conceivably help me. I don't want this published, it is for a class but the teacher is archiving it in a local folklore. This is only a part of what I'm doing. -Katie

1) What got you started in making AMVs? How did you hear about them?

2) Why do you think you enjoy making them?

I would say there's two main types of reasons for this: one is purely creative, and the other is social. Creatively, I really get a kick out of seeing my favorite music visualized. Before I even saw an AMV, I would always visualize stories, action, and other things of that sort in my head when listening to music. AMVs just became a natural extension of that. I like seeing my own AMVs finished. The social reasons came in later, as I got more and more into making videos. I've made a number of good friends via AMVing and I've always enjoyed sharing my work in a small but interested circle, getting and giving feedback on in-progress videos, and things of that sort. Much of what I do at work and school is very solitary in nature, so I really like the change of pace that comes with a collaborative hobby like this.

3) Do you use any particular Animes frequently in the AMVs you make?

I wouldn't say "frequently" - but I do often make more than one video with the same anime. The main thing with me and anime is that I actually watch a small amount of it, so a lot of what I watch ends up getting used in an AMV sooner or later.

4) What kind of music?

Well, I could go on for days about this, but I'll just say that music is the main reason I make AMVs. I like to visualize it. Otherwise I've made videos to a massive range of music, which is what I listen to. I make videos to music that I am enjoying at a particular moment.
Some people also say I make videos to weird music, which isn't really true - well, I did end up making videos to a whole bunch of oddball music (example: moldovan folk-punk-rap, which is far from the strangest music selection I made), but this is not because I'm trying to pick something strange or original. I seriously like all the music I made AMVs to, whatever other people might think of it.

5) What themes do you like to base your AMVs on?

Um, I don't know if I could narrow it down so much. But I would say a lot of my videos fall mostly into one of 3 types I make every once in a while - 1) Slow, texturist, somewhat introspective videos to unusual, progressive music - usually with a philosophic or romantic theme of some sort; 2) High-energy action-drama-character videos to hard music such as metal; 3) Bizzare, random, fun videos that I make to amuse myself and completely puzzle other people.

6) Are there any “inside jokes” (or even stories) that only AMV makers would understand?

Oh, hundreds. AMVers are a very community-oriented crowd and there is whole multi-editor projects based around community jokes and references. For example, there's things like birthday videos that get made for AMVers by other editors, often making subtle fun of the birthday person's work or their involvement in a community.
Many stories about AMVers also come from gatherings of editors at AMV conventions, where large groups of AMVers meet and party. With partying comes tons of silly behaviour that gets remembered and passed on as stories.
Finally, quite a few AMVers that I know are gamers and actively play games online with each other. Many of the jokes and stories that come out of games get passed on and implemented into videos. For example, consider several videos made with blatant references to Team Fortress 2.

7) Do you use any certain word(s) to describe yourself as a person who creates AMVs?

Outside the community, I say that I edit fan videos. Which is an accurate description because AMVs aren't the only video editing I've done.

8) Do you write Fanfiction or do any other kind of Fanart?

Not really. I prefer other kinds of writing to fanfiction and generally don't write a lot for a hobby (at least for now) because I am a graduate student and a teacher of writing, so I am totally burned out on writing after work. That's why I like AMVs, they're at least something a bit different for me to do. I draw, but only for myself. I used to do little comics and stuff, but have sort of given up.

Eh, I'm bored. . .:P

1) What got you started in making AMVs? How did you hear about them?
Well, I was talking to my now significant other online about 3 or 4 years ago, and he said he had made a video. Then he pointed me to the .org and said he wanted me to watch it. So I did, then decided that I wanted to do that too.

2) Why do you think you enjoy making them?
Eh, it's something to do. That and I like creating things. And it gives the chance to see an anime series in a new light and/or give visualization to a song.

3) Do you use any particular Animes frequently in the AMVs you make?
Usually Full Metal Panic and Hello Kitty. (Though not at the same time. . . .yet. . . .:uhoh:)

4) What kind of music?
I prefer using rock/metal type music, but really whatever I happen to get an idea with

5) What themes do you like to base your AMVs on?
Usually the oddest and/or most wrong thing that comes to mind.

6) Are there any “inside jokes” (or even stories) that only AMV makers would understand?
Yes.

7) Do you use any certain word(s) to describe yourself as a person who creates AMVs?
Outside of the AMV and anime community, I usually tell people I make fan made music videos with anime.

8) Do you write Fanfiction or do any other kind of Fanart?
I enjoy drawing fanart (Not too good at it, but I enjoy it. :P)

I reread this and I feel stupid because I'm sure you know what folklore is so sorry about that...anyway I appreciate your critique but do know that this is only a small part of my research-AMVs are going to be included as the folklore of anime fans I'm delineating in my project and this is some preliminary stuff to give me some basics on what to keep an eye out for as I know little about those who make AMVs (other than they are cool and I like them) and wanted to kind of "test the waters" before I went more in depth. I kept the survey short and kind of simple because I figured no one would want to devote a great amount of time to my project because, you know, who the heck am I.This is the first time I've done any kind of fieldwork as I'm sure you can tell.
Anyway, sincere thanks to everyone! -Katie

Tinkerlina wrote:1) What got you started in making AMVs? How did you hear about them?
Ran across a few in my meanderings in peer-to-peer life in 2001-2002. Was introduced to the Org in late 2003 by a friend.
Tinkerlina wrote:2) Why do you think you enjoy making them?
Believe it or not, my reasons are mostly artistic. I want to take the ethereal visions dancing in my mind and share them in a way no words ever can. I also take a perverse pleasure in forcing my will on something and reshaping it to my design.
Tinkerlina wrote:3) Do you use any particular Animes frequently in the AMVs you make?
Usually whatever I have on hand. I have a bias towards science fiction and fantasy, so that shows. Other than that, not really.
Tinkerlina wrote:4) What kind of music?
These days, metal. Much of it rather cheesy.
Tinkerlina wrote:5) What themes do you like to base your AMVs on?
It varies a lot from video to video. Some of my earlier works were romantic in nature, but I've since shifted to working with the sort of stuff you'd expect in a swords and sorcery type book.
Tinkerlina wrote:6) Are there any “inside jokes” (or even stories) that only AMV makers would understand?
Yes. "Shameless" is a word with a lot of jokes behind it. Most of the jokes center on personalities, just like any social circle.
Tinkerlina wrote:7) Do you use any certain word(s) to describe yourself as a person who creates AMVs?
"Shameless geek" about covers it. Also, "lazy".
Tinkerlina wrote:8) Do you write Fanfiction or do any other kind of Fanart?
Not that I'd ever admit to. OK, no, I really don't.

Randomly came across them on kazaa
Tinkerlina wrote:2) Why do you think you enjoy making them?
I enjoy it, it's an artistic outlet, and it gives me something to do.
Tinkerlina wrote:3) Do you use any particular Animes frequently in the AMVs you make?
Not really.
Tinkerlina wrote:4) What kind of music?
Anything that I'm into at the time. All my ideas are spontaneous usually, I hear a song and then I have to edit to it.
Tinkerlina wrote:5) What themes do you like to base your AMVs on?
Depends on what song is being used or what mood I'm in. Generally action and drama tho.
Tinkerlina wrote:6) Are there any “inside jokes” (or even stories) that only AMV makers would understand?
You'd be surprised how many :P

Tinkerlina wrote:1) What got you started in making AMVs? How did you hear about them?
,
I got started after watching a contest and attending a 101 panel and deciding I wanted to be a part of the vids I had been seeing on the internet. First saw a vid after stumbling on Doki or AluminumStudio's sites back in middle school.
Tinkerlina wrote:2) Why do you think you enjoy making them?
I'm not quite sure I do like it - i enjoy the result. The process is work plain and simple. It's kinda sadistic when I think of it.
Tinkerlina wrote:3) Do you use any particular Animes frequently in the AMVs you make?
No
Tinkerlina wrote:4) What kind of music?
That is not a question.
Tinkerlina wrote:5) What themes do you like to base your AMVs on?
I'm not sure I have consistent themes I use. I enjoy alternate story concepts, but "montage" is just as prevalent in the little I create.
Tinkerlina wrote:6) Are there any “inside jokes” (or even stories) that only AMV makers would understand?
Yes. However, sometimes non-editor friends would understand them as well by means of proximity.
