SEVEN AMV CATEGORIES:
1. TENSION: Any story or strong theme holding the audience in high suspense throughout. This could be (but not limited to) situations like: a conflict of wills, a calculated risk during a race against time, or confronting an ominous and shifting threat, or exploring and probing an unknown menace.
2. GENKI! The sugar-blast category. Light and fun exuberant works, possibly using dance beat. Themes with a fun-for-all, positive feel or outcome.
3. JAPANESE MUSIC: An open category using any sort of Japanese music, from traditional to enka to J-pop.
4. RETRO: This category has FOUR conditions. The AMV must meet any TWO of them:
(a) MIDI music from 'classic' game console systems.
(b) Audio source is anything created before 1983.
(c) All anime is 20th century.
(d) Video must appear as monochrome or black and white. You may add a sepia tone to the light color for the 'faded old film' look. (Grainy film treatments, longitudinal vertical scratches, or 'strands of hair and other cruft stuck in the projector window' effects are optional.)
Your choice - pick any two from the above.
5. RANDOM AMUSEMENT: This is a broader category than Comedy / Parody; it also includes bizarre or off-beat works that CON-fuse as well as A-muse.
6. TRAILERS: Includes fake commercials, TV spots, and movie and game trailers. May use actual advertising audio or a fictitious creation in the style of a commercial, trailer, or fake episode opening credits. Serious and intriguing dual-openers will also show in this category. Comedy trailers may get redirected to RANDOM AMUSEMENT.
7. ACTION & EFFECTS: This is where the high-speed music and flashy stuff meet. Take your Bonine® and buckle in!
VIDEO FORMATS:
YES: We will accept .avi, .mpg, and .mp4 formats encoded in Xvid 4.0, DivX 5.05, h264, and Microsoft MPEG 4 version 2, or earlier (lower numbered) versions of these codecs. Entrants using formats whose works encounter difficulties in playback will have about 2 weeks beyond the deadline to re-encode the work and resubmit.
NO: We will reject .wmv, .swf, .mov files, and also reject SVCD disks. Basically, we'll pop the disk in a Win2K computer (to ensure backward compatibility) and we will need to see an .mpg, .mp4 or .avi file. If we see anything else, or VIDEO_TS / AUDIO_TS directories, that entry gets rejected.
MINIMUM QUALITY: Video size should be at least 512 x 360 and at least 23 frames/sec.
MAXIMUM LENGTH: The hard limit is 4 minutes and 40 seconds (4:40) which will include all bumpers, intro, ending, opening and closing titles.
MAXIMUM FILE SIZE: For best playback, maximum file size is 150MB and maximum bit rate is 3000 kB/sec. A good guideline is that your final encoding should not exceed 32MB per minute of length.
SUBTITLES and BUGS: These are to be removed by the creator unless they are carefully selected to complement the work. Exception: You may create your own subtitles and overlay graphics to add to the work. Entries displaying a codec logo from a commercial codec vendor will also be rejected. Example: DivX versions 5.12 and higher often display the DivX logo. Earlier versions often do not display the logo.
PG-13: Because of the anticipated environment, AMV contest submissions must be PG-13 or less regarding 'mature' content. Usually 'illicit' means 'something the character would get arrested for not wearing (enough) in public if this were real life.' However, since this is animation we can usually get away with diffuse views which fog out the naughty bits. Creators can also start with 'illicit' material and sanitize it themselves using blurs, mosaics, overlays, and other effects.
RADIO-CLEAN LYRICS: Self explanatory. Hint: Good audio editing can often cover an 'explicit' word with a sliver of the same length taken from an instrumental section when the band is playing the same note or chords.
SUBMISSIONS and DEADLINE:
The submission deadline for the Kumoricon 2009 contest is 5:30pm PDT on Friday, July 17, 2009.
Late entries will be carried over as submissions into the 2010 contest.
PRIZES are awarded to one entrant per category by a tally of audience votes. An overall, Best of Show prize is also chosen by audience vote. The judges may select an additional entry to receive a Judge's Choice award or another honor of their creation. The AMV Contest Coordinator may select an entry for Special Mention. Therefore, a total of between seven and ten prizes shall be awarded in 2008.
Anyone may enter; you do not need to be a convention member and you do not need to be present at the convention to receive a prize. Winners who are not at the convention will be contacted privately for shipping details for their prizes.
HOW MANY AMVs?
This year you may submit up to FOUR AMVs, with a maximum of TWO in any one category.
WHERE and HOW to SUBMIT:
By email: Send an e-mail message to the contest coordinator with "KUMORICON 2009 AMV ENTRY" in the subject line. The e-mail address to use is in the characters below, just delete the four 'r' letters:
grury1656@oprusnert.com
The email should include a link to a download bage here on a-m-v.org, or some other hosting site where users can download the file. The site must be free to download, must work OK when browsing with Java and Javascript disabled, and must not REQUIRE cookies. MegaUpload is usable, but there are bandwidth limits for free downloads. Rapidshare has been problematic in the past for free downloading, so other hosting methods might be a better choice.
DO NOT SEND AN AMV AS AN ATTACHMENT IN AN EMAIL, because LARGE EMAILS (over 1500kb) GET DELETED at the remote server and we won't even get a chance to see them!
By physical mail: Burn a CD or a DVD, then check for compatibility by testing it on at least one computer running something ELSE besides Windows XP or Windows Vista. Once you see that the disk works, you can send it to:

So does the audio include 1983, or just before?Geirr wrote: 4. RETRO: This category has FOUR conditions. The AMV must meet any TWO of them:

As in "1983 and before", or "1982 and before"?
Because the song I'm using is from 1983..and it was one of the last songs this band did (btw, it's the project I've talked about on the Kumoricon forum, in the "But, is it Anime?" topic)
Cuz if 1983 is included then I meet b) and c)...and this video would sooo rock in this category.
