A Question about Regions
Do they only apply to TVs? Can I play a NTSC DVD in a PAL region on my computer?

Re: A Question about Regions
Computers are not intrinsically region-restricted, although the drives probably are. Even with that, though, if you've decrypted the disc then it won't be an issue.
NTSC vs PAL has nothing to do with that, though. The video format has no bearing on PCs. It's mostly just a division between framerate and resolution, and either way, it's the same MPEG-2 and AC3 or MP2 decoders doing the job of making the streams playable.

Haha, cool. So I just have to rip the DVD onto my pc so watch it.
And if I really wanted to have it on DVD, then burn it onto a blank dvd.
Cheers!

Not really, no. You can play any region DVD on (almost) any PC, as far as I believe. I am from Europe and R1 DVDs were never a problem for me.Qyot27 wrote:...although the drives probably are...

Re: A Question about Regions
Many player software likely circumvent the Region coding of the discs, but the drive itself is often region-locked, requiring a Firmware flashing or whatnot. DVD Decrypter will still rip the discs, but it will notify you of the issue and say that it has to use brute force decryption because of it - the solution thereby to make the drive Region-free by flashing the Firmware, etc.Nya-chan Production wrote:Not really, no. Some models may not have this, but it's not uncommon for them to be locked down like that. I had to flash mine so that my Japanese R2 edition of the Eva Renewal films could be ripped easier. Once I did that it took a fraction of the time it would have if I'd left the drive the way it was.

Maybe that's a US thing?Qyot27 wrote:Many player software likely circumvent the Region coding of the discs, but the drive itself is often region-locked, requiring a Firmware flashing or whatnot. UI have never met a person in here who wouldn't be able to play US DVDs on PC (and since they play Czech (R2) as well...)
