More than what you think, actually... most people aren't aware of that, or just say that amv are legal under fair use...
And I believe the current trend against IP violations is trying to get the courts to enforce their belief that Fair Use isn't a defensible use, it's only a defense in court. Meaning even if you're in the right, they have the right to run you through the ringer (just like we always thought, except it isn't all :tinfoil: - it's documented action).

And they threaten you, saying you can pay $4k now, or face paying ten times that after they pull you through court...

Anyway. Lessig keeps fighting the good fight.

Laws are about things like precedent and the letter of the law. But they aren't about thinking. Judges don't really judge, they are just there to manage.

It's probably not entirely there fault (the judges). The moment they judge, someone just complains, appeals and the judgment is rendered pointless. Because if the judge can't come to a ruling, and it stick, then why even have judges?

Maybe all we need are lawyers for and lawyers against and a jury. But nah, the jury would only get appealed I suppose.

When one sees rulings like the one from the article, it's clear society has become subjected to laws for the powerful by the powerful and schmucks need not expect to get very far.

Seeing this article tends to make me think really poorly about Prince. I wonder though if it's really Prince's doing or just the money managers at work.

Piracy is wrong, but this is clearly about stupidity, not piracy. And it only breeds contempt for those supporting copyright under these conditions.
Anime, one of the few things about the internet that doesn't make me hate the internet.

Nope. What about the independent labels that actually follow ethical norms and treat their fans with respect, while having reasonable rules on ways in which the music could be used?

I say, spend money on quality music from quality publishers, and vote against the multinational ultraprotectionist crap with your money. Go!
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I'm just trying to say that the best way to get a word in edge wise that has been proven to work through out history is to rally.

Rally against the companies not giving any respect then. Don't buy their stuff and spread the word. Feel sorry for the bands but if they cared, they'd be doing stuff about it too.

In the end, all they want is your money and if your not buying then they lose.

Start the list:
Universal Music Group

Who's next?

Trouble with that argument is... your generation has to have died first?

Not true, at least not according to what I've been thought. Those precedents didn't just come out of nowhere. It would have been a judge that through some thought process and evaluation of the facts and conditions, came to a conclusion that this is the right direction and consequently becomes law. So in effect, some case probably needs to be fought out there to serve as an example... trouble is, you versus big money studio, I'd put my money on the company.
