The Song Review Thread

Post by Brad » Fri Aug 22, 2008 8:12 pm

Okay. Here's how it works. I start it off by posting up a song. Whoever wants to post next, downloads the song, writes up a mini review for it, gives it a 10-scale rating, then posts a song of their own choosing. If you don't have your own web space, use mediafire, rapidshare, etc. or if the song is an an artist's MySpace or whatever, that works. And try and stick to the same format convention to keep it nice and consistent.

Song Name: Pogo (Shinichi Osawa Remix)
Artist: Digitalism
Genre: House / Detroit Techno

To keep things cool, maybe make a post saying "I'm getting this" and then edit it later, so that more than one person isn't reviewing the same thing

Review for Digitalism - Pogo (Shinichi Osawa Remix)

At first glance, it's a pretty typical electronic piece. Follows the common structure where it builds up piece by piece, breaks into the main theme, has an intermission in the middle, and ends on the main theme. The drumline and harmony somehow make me think that the song kind of emulates a rock song. I'm not sure if this is because of what the original piece sounded like, but there you go. Gives the song an interesting feeling, at the least. Lyrics are nothing to really pay attention to, but that's how it usually goes with electronic music.

Overall, this is a piece I'd probably hear on the dance floor and certainly enjoy, but I wouldn't go out of my way to ask the DJ what it was they were spinning. Fun and enjoyable, but not going to leave a big impact.

6.5/10 (this is with 5 being average, as in "meh, listening to it once, wouldn't bother listening again)

Review: Second Way by FiSH Tone

I find this trance song to be a bit rather unique in that it uses several instruments and not stick to the electronic formula. The use of piano can be pretty obvious, too, but still you can never go wrong with it and it sounds pretty cool in setting the base of the song.

I really appreciate the use of trumpet. It's not something you'd hear often in many genres, but here it sounds really nice. It gives a nice feel, maybe a bit out from trance, but yeah.

The beats sound just a tad bit silly, but really upbeat and nice. Hearing them play along with the piano is still pretty cool.

I can't help but feel that while listening to this song that it's like soundtrack for a mini-film of some sort.

I can find myself listening to this when I wanna hear something pretty chill.

7/10

I'm reviewing this one, because I have it on CD already. :)

Personally, this is one of my favorite songs right now. I heard it on the radio a few weeks back, and the beat entranced me. The shift in beat and vocals is just interesting and keeps you on your feet while you're listening. The drums are upbeat and perky, and the rest of music just wants to make you get up and dance! Especially that very first part of the song.

Lyrics are kind of superficial and shallow, but they still have their beautiful parts. "Take me on me on a trip!" "Take me to New York, I'd Like To See LA!" I like Kayne West's parts the best. His voice is just entrancing, and the audio works really well with his voice. Although, I think that the areas with zero audio (just vocals) are in dire need of a slower beat, instead of just blank space. It would sound SOOOO much better. I also think that it could have been cut down to about 3 minutes and been much better, removing the filler.

Overall, I'd think about a 8/10. It's really rare for me to like rap-ish like music, but this one just took me in.

Here's the next song.

Even though it's in the Donator's Forum? I guess I find it hard to see the harm in this.

To elaborate, since the Donator's Forum is a non-public forum, the likelihood that posting individual song links would get the site into any amount of legal hot water is pretty much zero. Heh, especially considering that the very public portion of this site hosts thousands of songs for download already (sure they're in video form, but you know what I mean). I can certainly agree that song links probably shouldn't be linked in the public forums, but I think the Donator's Forum can be a special case.

links to other websites can be backtracked. if a filesharing website wants to crack down on copyright violators, they could backtrack here.

it's a gimmicky pop song. far from madonna's best work, it showcases little emotion from her. she's frickin old though. justin timberlake does a better job, though it sounds like every other song on his cd futuresex/lovesongs. timbaland's interludes get just plain annoying. that said, it is a good catchy pop song to dance too. i could see this drawing a crowd on wedding reception dance floors. 4/10

Okay then how about we make it so they have to provide their own hosting? Would that be a viable alternative? Like, if somebody wanted to post a song and didn't have their own hosting, they could either link to a public site like LastFM or they could have somebody like me or whoever upload it for them.
