I prefer the theme panels. Ones like the indie panel, female editors panel, and comedy panel are usually good times. Studio panels can be fun to watch if you're a fan of the edtiors involved, too. I generally skip out on the workshop panels, though, since it's mostly old news for a seasoned editor.

With all the resources on the internet, most people go to panels to get another dose of their amv fix besides the limited showings of a contest.

Given how many cosplay-centric events are at Anime Boston, you’d think that faction wouldn’t spazz out until AMV events had drawn even with them. They get a permanent cosplay HQ, all kinds of how-to panels, several types of cosplay showcases (the masquerade being the biggest)…why can’t there be one room somewhere dedicated to AMV stuff? It might cut down on the number of people who attend the AMV 101/201 panel just to see AMVs, if they could get their AMV fix at more appropriate times during the con.
The rest of the crew and I were told by execs that we could possibly set up an entire track but I hesitate for 2 reasons:
1) I can see some bullshit happening that would result in the contest having to be played in that area too.
2) When this proposal was brought up to me it hinged on what seemed to be a "you need to become staff to make sure this happens" sort of thing. That would make those involved ineligible for any contest participation - something I'm not willing to give up.

#1 isn't very likely to happen.... I'll admit to a considerable bias given I've been on the staff since before the con started, but Boston tends to from my observation have a very good grasp on just how popular AMVs are with attendees. I don't see the contest not getting at least one showing in Main Events happening anytime soon. Having an AMV editor as one of the con's founding members/former con chair and having another past con chair currently running the AMV contest generally means that it gets a good bit of respect.

#2 though- yeah, that doesn't surprise me that much. It's an issue that many of us have had to deal with over the years. It's difficult to really get involved and change things from the outside, but then as you say you lose the ability to participate in many contests.

It's kind of boring and I'm not too sure how informative it'd be, but I don't think there'd be any problem in posting it...
If you don't mind, please do.

Yeah, I don't mind workshop type panels, but they do tend to go above the heads of the average viewer. That being said, I'm going to definitely try and gear my future panels towards having more fun. Instead of "here's how you do this" it's more like "here's how I did it, now I'll stfu and show you some fun vids"

With that said, I have been to a number of panels where the focus is on the AUDIENCE and what THEY WANT, but they're few and far between. I *try* to run a similar panel with very few videos actually shown, but well...I'm not in the audience so for all I know, they're also failures.

I agree, but I don't think your description is really a bad thing. I've been on about 7 or so panels, and every single time without exception, there is an OVERWHELMING lack of interest from the audience in the educational opportunities of the panel. No one asks questions about editing techniques, tricks of the trade, etc.

Most of the people who show up at a panel do so because they see "AMV" in the title, or they just heard the music playing from outside. Asking an AMV creator how they did an effect during a panel is like asking Keith Richards how he tunes his guitar. Its shop talk. No one wants to see that.

What people DO want to see are awesome videos, with interesting trivia, stories behind, etc. A panel is your little 30 minutes to let people know who you are, what you're all about, and maybe debut a new video. All the HypeOdermic Studios panels were essentially the Wonka and Beo show, while we showed our greatest hits, made fun of each other, and basically talked about how awesome we both were, and thats the way it should be.
