T-Mode 2008 AMV contest

Post by thehermithole » Mon May 19, 2008 8:04 pm

T-MODE is an annual anime and gaming convention dedicated to the expansion of Asian culture and video gaming in the United States. Previously announced guests for 2008 include actor/director/musician Johnny Yong Bosch (Bleach, Trigun, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers); industry member Kevin McKeever (Robotech); and the first Maryland visual kei band, [geist]. This year's T-MODE is dedicated to the memory of T-MODE Founder and Chairman, Lawrence Stuckey.

T-Mode will be held Sept 5 - 7, 2008 in Arlington, VA. The deadline for AMV submissions is July 1. Visit the website at http://tmode.org/Events/events_video.html. Please send any questions to amventry@tmode.org or post them here.

GUIDELINES
The T-MODE 2008 AMV contest is here and it’s time to get those AMVs in! This year, there will be a slight change to the submission policy as we are currently not accepting mail-in entries. Submissions this year will only be accepted via FTP upload. We will be presenting awards in various categories and there are 7 rules to keep in mind:

1. With the exception of judges, any person may enter this contest. You also don’t need to attend the convention in order to enter.

2. Since T-MODE is an anime & gaming convention, we accept both anime and video game AMVs. This also includes video games like WoW, Doom, and Halo.

The categories this year will be as follows:
• Romance
• Trailers
• Drama
• Comedy
• Action
• Competition Opening
• Mature

The Mature category includes content unsuitable for younger viewers. It will be shown in a separate late night screening as part of the MMM (Mature Midnight Madness) segment. There is no restriction on content for this category (hentai, violence, language, etc) as long as it meets the submission criteria outlined here.

The winner of the competition opening category will be shown as the official AMV contest intro.

3. A text document must be submitted with your entry that includes the following information:
• Name
• Email and Mailing address
• AMV title
• Series title(s)
• Name of song & artist
• Runtime of entry
• Requested category (T-MODE has the right to change submission category)

4. Contact amventry@tmode.org about your submission, and we will forward the account information for you to upload your AMV.

5. Only high quality submissions will be accepted. Entries that have poor audio or visual properties can not be reproduced on larger screens for convention viewing. Videos should have a 720x480 pixel size and a frame rate of 29.97 fps (NTSC "drop frame"). Acceptable file formats include: MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and Windows Media. Submissions cannot exceed 200MB.

6. Entries must be a minimum of 30 seconds and no longer than 6 minutes. Please include at least 10 seconds of black both before and after your video.

7. No commercial subtitles, logos, etc will be permitted. However, you can include subtitles that are your own.

ALL VIDEOS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY JULY 1, 2008.

For those of us editing at 23.976 or 24 fps and submitting as MPEG-2, is 23.976 or 24 fps with the "3:2 pulldown upon playback" flag acceptable?

Also, if we have anamorphic widescreen video and are submitting as MPEG-1/2, is it okay to encode anamorphic (with the 16:9 flag), or should we downsize, letterbox, and encode standard (4:3 flag)?

Thanks for your interest and questions. 23.976 fps with 3:2 pulldown should be ok. Anamorphic widescreen is fine.

We will test all the videos we get just to make sure there aren't any playback issues. The contest deadline is 2 months before the con so as to leave us plenty of time to resolve any playback problems. As long as we get a submission by July 1 we'll keep working afterwards to make sure every video looks great.

How many entries per person would you like to see?

No restriction on number of entries per person, so you're welcome to submit more than 1 if you like.

Though if we get 20 videos from one person we might ask him or her to pick some favorites.

My entry is currently finishing its upload as we speak. (Around 90% done.) I would have uploaded it much sooner, but I had a lot of technical difficulties with the encoding and the leads. Still, I hope it'll still be accepted, in spite of being a bit past the July 1 due date. I really tried hard to get it in on time.

Not to worry Angelic, we'll take your submission. Thanks for getting it in.

Thank you to everyone who entered. Judging will take place Sept 5 - 7 at T-Mode with results announced shortly thereafter.
