Thanks for posting this! Wow, Experimental category, huh? Thank you for having my video ('Slayers COMEBACK') be apart of the contest (Hope someone in the audience found it amusing!). Wish I could've been there.

Congrats to everyone!

I gather this means, that you, too, were moved out of the category in which you originally entered? I entered mine in Drama. "Be a Man" was originally an action entry.

I preferred how it was last year, where if a category was under-represented, additional videos were allowed in other categories to fill out the time slot. Granted, it meant 17 videos in each of the drama and action categories, but it's much more equitable, and in keeping with the creator's wishes. In an audience vote, a funny video like "Be a Man" will always dominate over a video that truly represents the category like "Lily White." Does that make it the best "experimental" video?

At least the judges acknowledged "Lily White" with the best of its category, but the use of the experimental category as an overflow for videos that didn't quite make the cut of their category still tips the scales in too many directions and is unfair to the creators (particularly the few who actually do create an experimental video). Breaking up the videos as they did last year probably would have changed nothing, except "Be a Man" would probably have won audience vote for action, more appropriate to its presentation.

Would it have won audience best of show under these circumstances? I don't know. I think the ballots were flawed because they didn't have a specific place for the audience to vote for their favorite of all the videos, and instead the audience "Best of Show" was calculated from whichever video got the most votes in its category. As a result, "Be a Man" won Audience Best in Show because it so easily won its category, while the comedy vote was probably split between "Too Loud" and "The Harassment of Kyon." I would like to have seen these three videos go toe-to-toe for the grand prize. Now that would have been a contest!

By the way, major kudos to you for using a song from "Cats Don't Dance," one of the most under-rated and under-appreciated animated films of the "Post-'Lion King'" era.

Yeah, I was kinda surprised when I saw my vid in that category...but nothing I could really do or say since it's ultimately up to the judges.

Then again I'm not sure my vid really fits into action...it's more of an AmTV type vid, though the two reasons why I submitted to AX as Action was because AmTV turned Pro (which I still don't like) and that Action at AX also has the /Adventure...which is what I think my vid fits more. I don't know. lol

But from what I saw there was a place to vote for "Best of"...it was towards the top right of the ballot and it was called "Favorite:". That's where I thought you were supposed to vote for Best of, but not sure exactly, hehe. I also didn't like the fact that no pencils were given out. I was scrambling to find a pen/pencil, haha.

Congrats to everyone who made it and the winners. =]

@Vespabee - I enjoyed your vid on the big screen!

I didn't see anything there. Perhaps the ballots were drafted by the same people who drafted the Florida ballots for the 2000 presidential election.

Yeah, I went for Comedy. But I guess with my video is, it's got a mix of light-hearted action and little bits of humor but it's not side-splitting funny so I can see why they moved it. But then again, it's not "experimental" either. No flashy effects, and the footage + music used are over a decade old. *shrugs* Again, it's up to the judges - I'm just happy my video got in for people to see. It's sole purpose is to get fans excited for the new Slayers series coming out, nothing more.

And I see what you mean about how the contest results would've been different if they were in their intended categories. It's true that the funnier video usually goes out on top in the end, but hey, what can you do? Only thing, I guess, is doing what you're doing and ask the coordinators to go back how they did it before. I wasn't there but I definitely agree on the confusion of the ballots and the lack of pencils. Not many people carry around a writing utensil so that is something the coordinators should take note about for next time.

Aw, thank you! That movie really is underappreciated, 'tis a shame. I purchased the DVD a few months ago and after a multiple viewing, the lightbulb over my head sparked an idea for a video. Plus, no one else on the site has used Nothing'sGonnaStopUsNow so I thought it'd be original enough. :)

*sniff* Thank you, NightHawk! TTwTT

I also think "Be A Man" didn't just benefit for being a humorous video in the "wrong" category; I'm sure all the Gainax/Gurren Lagann hype at Fanime helped a little too. ;) Really, you couldn't have picked a better timing to release a kick-ass TTGL amv. I think the people who voted for it would've done the same no matter what category it was in.
