Let's get some opinions: Bootleg or no?

Post by inthesto » Sun Dec 23, 2007 3:01 pm

I don't feel like waiting on a theater run and then several more months for a DVD release of this movie, so I'm looking to import it. Problem is, while Play Asia is good with not selling bootlegs, anything out of Hong Kong is an instant red flag. Combined with the low price, I can't help but be suspicious.

Granted, it's got the right DVD region, but I don't know how to add these things up.

I would think bootleg, just from the low price (and English subtitles?) But on the other hand, it's sort of odd then if is a bootleg, because it's region encoded :|

If it's bootleg, you'd better not rely on the subtitles for translation. Bootleg subtitles turn any movie genre into comedy instantly.

You can't direct link from Angelfire. It jus shows up as a white badge with "IMAGE HOSTED BY ANGELFIRE". Here.

If you need image hosting, I can hook you up with a subdomain of command-q.

I should take some caps of my old Ah My Goddess Movie bootleg that I got in some shady New York shop in '01. The characters had different names that didn't make any sense at all and were absolutely hilarious.

Ah, weird. They were fine for me when I was previewing, etc. Thanks for the offer though, I have image hosting, I was just being lazy :uhoh:

Subtitles Chinese, English
That right there makes me think it's bootleg. If you check their other, older and more likely to be legit, anime none of it seems to have both chinese and english subtitles.

English is an official language in Hong Kong, so most DVDs contain both Chinese and English subs. The disc is also listed at YesAsia, who aren't known for selling bootlegs. I'd say it's legit.

'k, I was curious so I did some basic googling. There is an official hong kong version and it does contain english and chinese. So I withdraw my objections, I was wrong.

It's legit. It has all the right copyright informaton for import into Korea. Knowing that, I may well get this myself. Outside of Japan releases are shitton cheaper. I've picked up two Mika Nakashima albums and a NANA DVD for dirt cheap because they're only licensed for the rest of Asia, but they are licensed.
