Ohhh good, I was afraid to mention Netflix. It's OK to use it, then. Score.

Works best if you have a lot of hard drive space, but even with the throttling/limits, it's awfully cheap compared to buying.

Eh well its expensive if you want all the latest software and such. I have Adobe Premiere 6.5 + Photoshop CS + Adobe After Effects 7.0 = $350-400. (Adobe premiere and photoshop i got off of ebay/amazon and got AE from a relative). Anime DVD's well, i don't have that many. If i already have good quality raws of the series, i don't feel like spending money on it :? . Other than that, i get DVDS from friends or go rent and rip em.

Only thing i actually spent hard worked money for was for my new computer. That wasn't for making amvs totally. Also for some gaming and other stuff.

If you want to get the latest adobe software and spend hundreds of dollars go ahead =/ but you can get really good software thats just as good and cheap.

"Owning" dvds is something of an mystery. I often ask myself why I go to the trouble of getting something permanent, when the usual norm is I watch it about 3 times when I first obtain it, and then it's more a shelf ornament than anything else.

This is further enhanced by the fact that you are always getting exposed to new stuff, so it's not like you are going to rewatch something ad naseum really.

This happens with my whole friggin media collection regardless of what it is.

Now as for fan subs, well it depends, while it is "easier" to watch it in English, occasionally the dubs have nearly nothing in common with the original dialogue, so the reason for getting dubs is usually about lazy :)

DVD format is usually nice, all that bonus stuff n all, but unless you have an HD tv and a great obsession to milk that little extra out, well the view from a fan sub is about the same.
Granted, if you have a fan sub, you have text in the image (some amv makers though either don't know how, or couldn't care less about dumping the text).

But the main thing about fan subs, is they appear before dvd, and in some cases, dvd just doesn't happen. Although I am occasionally surprised by that which is chosen to be licensed. I have a 3 inch binder full of dvds with fan subbed anime that might never actually make it to dvd. Dvd is never assured after all.
Anime, one of the few things about the internet that doesn't make me hate the internet.

I wasn't aware there were that many series that aired on TV that never made it to R2.

I recently had like 70% of my dvds go bad. DVD-rs that is. so don't rely on them. ESPECIALLY if you put them in a folder, that's what I think did them in. All my retail dvds and cds in folders were fine, but my dvd-rs took a dive. so keep the writable stuff in easily accessible places, jewel cases, sleeves or even on the spindle (though it IS tough to get to the bottom one with 40 other discs blocking the way...), don't use a case for anything not retail ^.^ (cd-rs might be ok as well... I never had one of them go bad on me).

I also recently discovered a bunch of my carefully hoarded collections went kaput. I'm extremely wary of using discs to save anything, now, and have two backup harddrives to combat the problem. Of course, one of those drives erased everything out of the blue about a year ago...this is why I have TWO now. I may get a third soon, because I've found that I tend to store most of my footage on my biggest drive and backing up all 200 GB is difficult to do when your other drives combined can't hold it, nevermind store their own stuff.

Great, now I'm all paranoid about the discs I haven't checked in awhile. :(

I've noticed that a lot of the anime licensing companies are getting smarter about what to license (and I would say what "not to license" but they still license the most random stuff)

especially ADV and Funimation -

Funi as they have gotten Fullmetal Alchemist, Death Note, Ah My Goddess 2 and Host Club, some of the more popular series I've seen floating around on fansubs... Death Note was licensed before they finished airing the series - granted its now taking a while to release here.

and ADV has recently gotten Air TV, D.N. Angel, Elfen Lied, and thanks to Hold Me Now - Princess Tutu is also rather popular. (hehe free advertising for ADV in an AMV O: hehe - so much so one of their voice actors has it on her myspace O.o)

it surprised me when Suzumiya got licensed by Pioneer, I almost never hear of them getting anything that seems really popular lately, and that came out here almost instantly after it came out on DVD in Japan (or so it seemed to me, especially when you compare it to series that have taken forever to license)

and as for the whole "dub vs sub" war/argument/etc that is practically null now that DVDs offer BOTH.. (unless its a shounen-ai series licensed by Anime Works/Media Blasters - then youre stuck with a Sub no matter what) Personally, I like having a choice...

you may say that its "lazy" to watch a dub, but for me when I'm thinking of an amv or whatever I want to see the footage, not necessarily keep up with the "original" storyline its highly helpful. (not to mention most dubs I see, though the VA is not all that great, seem to keep up with the original storyline fairly well... dubbing has gotten better imho)

and weather or not I watch something a million times or not (I think I've seen CCS at least 5 times since I got it O: but its one of my fav series XD) I will still always have it around in case I wanna make an amv out of it... so it still serves its purpose as I tend to buy series I also wanna make amvs from.
