I find that when I watch amvs I typically go away thinking 'who the hell would listen to this song normally??' I'm not saying that a song can ruin an amv, I'm saying a truley original concept can make me listen to a song. But in the end, the song is still a stinker. It's weird but you'd think that perusing amvs would be like listening to the radio... but you hardly EVER hear a popular song on the most popular amvs.
And I'm NOT saying all popular songs are good, I'm just saying their typically popular for a REASON. It's just a weird coincadence...
So in the end, no, I don't listen to many amv songs when listening too music. In the end, I suppose popular songs are just too general to be a good amv, and thus the good amvs may not showcase popular songs. This doesn't take into account personal taste btw.

The amvs I keep are all tossed into my playlist with my other mp3s; then everything plays on shuffle. Most of the time I'm doing something, and won't have time to watch the video, so I just leave the music playing.
It's true that amvs introduce me to new artists and songs, and since the music and video are tied so well, it's rare for me to keep the end product if I completely hate one of the sources.

For the most part, I don't usually get much excitement from a song unless there is some visual connection for me. I could hear a song over and over and never give it a second thought, and maybe even dislike it, but then after I have seen it in an AMV, a Music Video, a video game, an anime opening, etc, I may suddenly begin liking it.

Eh, I got into AMVs by the way of music. Naturally, music is still a prime interest in the whole package for me. There are exceptions where I will like an AMV and not like the music in and of itself, but that's what they are - exceptions.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

If this is an attempt to ask if AMVs have broadened musical horizons see this thread - http://www.animemusicvideos.org/phpBB/v ... hp?t=80917
If it's an attempt to see if more or less people are close minded about music when it comes to watching videos than, say, buying CDs or listening to the radio, i'd say you're onto something. From what i've seen, people will still hold their judgements about liking or not liking music even after they see a great video to it, but people that never really had an oppinion to begin with about a genre will more often than not pick up a new band because of their experiences.

actually, since i don't listen to radio, i don't wath much television, and i don't just buy CDs if i like ONE song, AMVs are my source for finding both anime and music i like. this way, i can get a song from iTunes or buy a DVD that i know i'll like, because i've seen/heard it in AMVs. i think it makes the quality of things i buy much better when it comes to music and anime. and, even when i already like a video a lot, i might listen to the song alone. i might not care for a song originally but really love the video, and then it's fun to listen to the song, too (but i often can imagine parts of the video i love). koop's skittles is that way. i liked the song when i saw it with the AMV, but when i watched the original music video, i hated it - just because that's not the music culture i like, being a hip-hop, R&B, rap mix and having girls in matching sweatsuits and tight T-shirts and guys in baggy sweatshirts and T-shirts and jeans and cornrows. nothing against it, it's just not my thing. i can like the music separate from the "image" or "look" or "culture", especially if it's introduced to me as an enjoyable AMV. so this is really how i preview the things i like. it's literally a commercial for me.

It's more difficult to make a good and popular AMV with a popular song because most people will be sick of the song by the time you come along. Not impossible, just more difficult than using something fresh.Knowname wrote:It's weird but you'd think that perusing amvs would be like listening to the radio... but you hardly EVER hear a popular song on the most popular amvs.

That's entirely aside from the "all popular music sux lolz" factor. Even if the greatest song in the universe became popular all of a sudden, people would still get sick of it after hearing it seventy-seven times every time they go to the supermarket.
Original question - depends on the video and the song. Sometimes. If I like the song that much and want to listen even when I can't watch AMVs, I'll probably rip it out of the video until I get around to buying the CD. Yeah, yeah, I know.
