What Do You Want In A Con?

Post by Driftpeasant » Sat Jun 12, 2004 2:16 pm

As you may have deduced, I am the video head at Ushicon. We have a fairly traditional AMV Showcase event. So we're not all that original currently. Obviously we can't all be AWA, and honestly, we'd rather be original. So I guess I'm asking if there's anything ya'll would like to see in a con from an AMV perspective.

Right now I've got 7 months till the con, and if anything really cool/neat/interesting pops up, we still have time to get it in.

Thanks for your help.

Show the AMVs on time, in a big room with good accoustics (sp?) and all will be well 8)

...at Fanime this year, both the semifinalists showing and the DDR Project showing started late :( ...Fanime's my main convention experience, and it's highly improbable that I'll go to Ushicon, but still, that's my 2 cents

Another important thing with AMV contests would be the seating arrangements. I've been to a con where they had small, armless chairs all pressed together (to fit more in), and even then there weren't any empty seats. So basically, you were literally touching shoulders and legs with the people on either side of you. Needless to say, it was less than pleasant. Just make sure the room you're using will comfortably fit the number of people you're predicting will attend (and even adding extra attendees to that estimate, just to be on the safe side).

1. The judging should be done fairly. Ballot judging seems to work best for this. Make the contest also 'blind' so that people aren't biased because of creators names.

2. Have time set asside to show ALL the videos that were entered. Even those that didn't make the finals. (If I was a creator going to the convention, and spending my money to be there, I would atleast like to see my video shown).

3. Give the AMV creators some sort of bonus for their hard work. Prefered seating is always nice. You could always arrange a creator's gathering.

4. Allow digital submissions. Everyone seems to like those.

That's all I can think about right now.

Uhm, it's an AMV showcase so there's no contest. I actually like that about Ushicon (technically my home con since I live in Austin) since no one bitches afterwards.

As for blind contests (in general), one could argue then that the creator also doesn't get any credit. I somewhat agree with your point, but also think creators should get recognition. The only blind contests I like are Pro, where it's blind to the judges, but at the showing, the audiences sees the name.
