This train has left the station

Post by I Fight For The Users » Mon Apr 09, 2012 5:01 pm

Approximately a month ago, Yue appointed me lead of this project. I do not
know if that appointment has been accepted by all members of the .org
administration, but the level of explicit and implicit support I have received
has convinced me that the majority knows what's going on.

We (currently: Mister Hatt, Sanya-nya, and I) are developing a smaller, more
understandable .org application.

SUMMARY
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

codebases and issue trackers:
AMV catalog: https://github.com/amvorg-underground/catalog
proposed AMV guide app: https://github.com/amvorg-underground/guide
data to play with: http://amv.iriscouch.com/_utils/

demo instance: http://amv.ninjawedding.org/ (not much there yet; see below)

IRC: #grommet @ irc.synirc.org

You can get an idea of what we're working on by reading the open issues.
Please file feature requests at those issue trackers.

CURRENT STATUS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am doing the unglamorous-yet-necessary task of writing code to sanitize
inputs on the video entry page. Once that is completed, video entry and
catalog pages can be done, which will flesh out the rather bare-looking demo
instance.

Ask Mister Hatt about the guide application; I admittedly don't know too much
about his plans for it.

TECHNOLOGIES
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many, really. Catalog is a Web application written in Ruby, using Rails
(version 3.2.1). It connects to CouchDB; in future, it will probably also use
Lucene or maybe Solr. Guide is a Web application written in Perl, using the
Mojolicious framework.

We plan to integrate a forum application at some point; we don't care what the
forum application is written in, so long as it's not too hard to get different
authentication/authorization backends working with it.

HOW TO HELP
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm looking for people who have experience with all aspects of Web application
development. If this sounds like you, feel free to drop by, ask questions,
check out the code, and submit some patches. After they've had a review and
are accepted, I'll grant you a commit bit to catalog.

Once we get further along our to-do list, I would like everyone to play with
the demo instance and provide feedback (via issues of course) about how things
work.

WHAT WE ARE NOT DOING
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are not implementing all current .org features; we are implementing what we
think the .org _should_ be.

We are not yet concerned with having this application be reachable at
http://www.animemusicvideos.org. Obviously that's important, but we are not
concerned with the present state of the .org's server loadout. We believe
that this effort will produce a product that is attractive enough to warrant
server reconfiguration where necessary, or perhaps entirely different hosting.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This post is an incomplete summary of what we're doing. For more information,
drop by #grommet at irc.synirc.org.

Yup, it was agreed on by everyone in the meeting on 02/23/2012.

Good to know how quickly you got the official ok to get down to busine-....oh wait, that's right.

Either way

Hopefully you'll get the official ok sometime soon... :?

sweet. Even though it is rather sparse and bare as of right now its still like stumbling into a genuine oasis in the desert and its the first real glimpse of progress.

Yes it was .__.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Autocompletion for music and anime. No more unwieldy list entry; just type what you want. If it's messed up, just erase it and re-enter it. If it's not a verified entry, that's fine -- it can be verified later on and checked/adjusted automatically.

This isn't yet available on amv.ninjawedding.org because I need a place to host a Solr installation. That might happen within the next couple of days.
